Need help with first net check-in - feeling nervous!

I got my Tech license two weeks ago and want to start checking into our local Thursday night net on the 146.52 repeater. I've been listening for a month but I'm nervous about actually checking in. What's the proper procedure? Do I just give my call and location when they call for check-ins? Any tips for a new ham would be really appreciated!

Welcome to the hobby! Just wait for net control to call for check-ins, then give your call sign phonetically, your name, and location. Don't worry - everyone was new once and the net control will help guide you through it.

I was terrified for my first check-in too! The Thursday net folks are super welcoming - just key up and say something like "KJ7XYZ, this is Mike in Springfield, checking in to the net." They'll probably ask if you're a new ham and welcome you specially.

That's exactly how I started 6 months ago. Pro tip: write down your check-in on paper first so you don't stumble over words. The net control always asks for repeats if they miss anything, so don't stress about being perfect!
