felt kind of bad after my first net check-in, did i do something wrong?

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last tuesday and i think i messed up a few things. first off i gave my callsign once and then just waited and the net control asked me to repeat it which was a little embarrassing. then when they asked if i had any traffic i wasnt sure what that meant exactly so i just said no which i think was right? but then afterward someone came on and said their name and location and i didnt do that and im not sure if thats expected or optional.

also the whole thing felt really fast, like net control was moving through check-ins quick and i felt rushed. is there like an unwritten script people follow or do you just pick it up over time? nobody was rude or anything i just felt like i was winging it while everyone else knew exactly what to do.

oh man i remember that feeling exactly, my first net check-in i completely forgot to say my callsign phonetically and net control had to ask me twice. you're definitely not alone there.

the name and location thing is pretty common on a lot of local nets but its usually optional unless the net control specifically asks for it. some nets have a real specific format they follow and if you can find the net's info page or ask someone in the club they might have a little script written out. a lot of nets do it the same way every week so after two or three times it starts to feel natural. giving your call twice is actually a good habit since HTs especially can get stepped on pretty easy. sounds like you did fine honestly, nobody bails on a net because a new check-in was a little rough.

yeah the traffic thing confused me too when i started. basically they're asking if you have a formal radiogram or message to pass through the net, most casual local nets nobody actually has traffic so saying no is completely normal. some nets are more formal about it than others, like the NTS stuff gets pretty procedural but a typical club net is pretty relaxed. you'll get the hang of it fast.
