felt kinda bad after my first net check-in, did i do something wrong?

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the Tuesday evening 2m net our club runs and i think i messed up a few things. when the net control called for check-ins i just said my callsign and that was it, wasnt sure if i was supposed to say my name or location or what. then at one point i tried to make a comment after another station finished talking and i guess i either stepped on someone or the timing was off because net control kind of repeated the last guy's call again before acknowledging me.

nobody said anything mean about it and net control was nice but i just felt awkward after. is there like a standard way you're supposed to check in and participate in these things? i've read a bit about it but it's different actually doing it on the air for the first time.

dont worry about it at all, honestly everyone fumbles their first few check-ins. the timing thing you mentioned is totally normal, it takes a while to get a feel for when to key up especially on a repeater because there's the hang time and the courtesy tone to wait for before you talk or you'll get cut off or step on someone.

as for what to say at check-in, most nets want at least your callsign and first name, some want location too, just listen to how others check in for the first couple minutes and copy whatever format they're using. net control usually sets the tone early on. some nets are super formal with signal reports and all that, others are just hey here's my call, good evening everyone. sounds like yours is probably pretty casual if it's a local club net. you'll get the hang of it after two or three more times, seriously.

yeah the courtesy tone thing got me too when i first started. i kept jumping in too fast and clipping the front of my audio. took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out what i was doing wrong lol. now i just wait for the beep and then count like one beat in my head before i key up and it works fine.
