Where exactly can I operate as a new Technician? Band edge safety margins?

Just passed my Tech exam and I'm confused about staying inside the authorized frequency ranges. I read that you shouldn't transmit exactly at band edges due to calibration error and frequency drift, but how far inside should I stay?

The ARRL has detailed band plans showing allocations within each band, but I want to make sure I understand the practical operating guidelines.

What's considered good practice for band edge margins, especially on VHF/UHF?

Most experienced hams try to stay at least a few kHz inside the band edges, and it's always better to err on the side of caution. Radios can drift in frequency as they warm up, and calibration errors can push your signal outside the authorized range.

I had the same question when I started! Understanding band plans is crucial for compliance and effective communication. I keep the ARRL frequency chart handy and usually stay 5-10 kHz inside the edges on HF, and similar margins on VHF/UHF to be safe.

Transmitter calibration errors and frequency drift during operation can cause you to transmit illegally out of band. On VHF/UHF, I typically stay at least 25 kHz from the band edges - your radio's frequency stability and antenna SWR can both affect where you're actually transmitting.
