New ham here - proper net check-in etiquette question

Just passed my Tech exam last week and I've been listening to the Tuesday evening ARES net on our local repeater. I'd like to check in next week but I'm a bit confused about proper procedure. Do I need to wait for the NCS to ask for check-ins from my call area, or can I just jump in when they ask for any stations? Also, should I say anything more than my call sign and location? The NCS seems pretty formal and I don't want to mess up the flow.

Welcome to the hobby! When NCS asks for check-ins, just give your call sign followed immediately by your call - no need to unkey between. Keep it simple: 'N0ABC this is KC1DEF.' If it's your first time on that net, mentioning you're a new ham is actually helpful.

Address the NCS with their call sign followed immediately by your call sign - no need to 'unkey' between calling the NC and identifying yourself. Most nets welcome newcomers, so don't worry about making mistakes. The NCS will guide you if needed.

I was nervous about my first net check-in too! If you need to ask a question or comment, just say 'Comment' and the NCS will acknowledge you for follow-up remarks. Everyone was very patient when I fumbled through my first few times. You'll do fine!
