feeling dumb about net check-ins, what am i doing wrong

ok so ive been licensed about 4 months now (general) and i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last tuesday. been lurking on it for like 6 weeks just listening so i thought i had a decent idea of how it went. anyway when net control asked for check-ins i keyed up and gave my call but apparently i did something wrong because there was this awkward pause and then net control kind of repeated back my call in a weird tone and moved on. i dont think i introduced myself properly or gave enough info? i wasnt sure if i was supposed to wait for a pause between other check-ins or just jump in when he called for them. and do you always say your name and location or just the call? ive heard people do it both ways on different nets. nobody was rude or anything but i felt like i definitely flubbed it and i havent gone back since which i know is dumb. just want to make sure i understand the procedure before i try again

hey dont sweat it, we've all been there honestly. most nets want you to give your call sign phonetically at least the first time, then your name and location — something like "Whiskey Alpha one Echo Bravo, this is Mike in Springfield" or however your net does it. the pause thing can vary a lot, some net controls are just slow to write things down and that awkward silence doesnt necessarily mean you did anything wrong. the best thing you can do is just listen to how the first few check-ins handle it and copy exactly that format. also some nets have a specific check-in procedure they announce at the start, easy to miss if youre nervous. seriously just get back on there, net controls generally love having new people check in and even if you fumble it they usually just ask you to repeat. the only way to get comfortable is to do it more.

yeah i had almost the exact same experience on my first net check-in lol. what helped me was actually emailing the net manager beforehand and just asking what format they preferred. felt kinda silly doing it but the guy was super nice about it and now i check in every week. some nets are really formal and want phonetics every time and others are totally casual and just a quick callsign is fine. depends a lot on the net.
