Bureau vs Direct QSLing - Real world success rates after 2 years

I've been tracking my QSL success rates religiously since getting back into HF after a 15-year break. Here's what I've learned over 24 months and about 5,000 QSOs:

  • Direct mail: 63% return rate (450 sent, ~285 received back so far)
  • LoTW: 18% confirmation rate
  • eQSL: Only 9% - surprisingly low
  • Bureau: Still waiting on most after 2+ years

The lesson? Of 318 paper QSL cards received, 302 were "thank yous" - if I didn't request one, I didn't get one. For serious award chasing, you need to be proactive with your QSLing strategy.

Thanks for sharing the hard data! This confirms what I've been telling newer hams. Countries with small amateur populations are less likely to have bureaus, which means the more sought-after QSLs often can't go via bureau and need direct mail - it costs much more but it's needed for the prized cards.

Your LoTW rate seems low to me - I'm seeing closer to 30-35% on mine. Are you uploading regularly? The beauty of LoTW is confirmations can happen minutes after a QSO, versus cards taking weeks, months or years to arrive. Maybe some of your contacts haven't uploaded their logs yet?

Some national societies make bureau QSLing easy for members - in Germany, DARC dues include unlimited free bureau use, and local clubs have QSL managers who handle everything for you at club meetings. The infrastructure varies dramatically by country, which definitely affects your success rates depending on who you're working.
