confused about net check-in procedures, when do you actually talk?

so i finally got my tech license a few months ago and ive been listening to the local 2m net on tuesday nights trying to figure out how it all works before i jump in. but honestly im still a bit lost on the timing of things. like when the net control calls for check-ins, do you just key up and say your callsign? do you wait for a pause? i heard someone say you're supposed to wait for a specific break but i wasnt sure if that was just for HF nets or what.

also whats the deal with doubling — is that when two people key up at the same time? because i've heard some weird garbled stuff happen and i think thats what it was. just dont want to make a fool of myself when i finally check in. any advice from people who actually run nets or check in regularly would be great.

hey welcome to the hobby, dont be nervous about checking in, everyone doubles at some point including people who've been doing this for 20 years. on most local 2m nets when net control asks for check-ins you just wait for them to finish talking, make sure the repeater tail drops, then give your callsign. some nets want phonetics, some dont, just listen to how other people are doing it the first couple times and copy that.

you're right about doubling, that's when two stations transmit simultaneously and the repeater catches both and it just sounds like noise. if it happens net control will usually just ask for the stations to try again and nobody cares. the main thing is just listen before you transmit and you'll be fine. honestly just jump in next tuesday, the worst that happens is you have to say your call again.

I was in exactly the same spot about a year ago, just listening for like three weeks before I worked up the nerve to check in. What finally helped me was that the net control on our local net was really patient and would slow down if someone new seemed confused. I'd say just go for it — give your callsign when there's a gap after the check-in request, and if net control doesn't copy you just try again. most net controls appreciate new check-ins and will work with you.
