First HT purchase - Baofeng vs Japanese radios for new ham?

Just passed my Tech exam and ready to get my first handheld! I keep seeing debates about starting with a Baofeng UV-5R vs spending more on a Yaesu FT-65R. The price difference is huge ($25 vs $120), but I want something reliable that won't frustrate me as I learn. Will I regret going cheap, or is the Baofeng fine to get started?

Also wondering about programming - heard these things can be tricky to set up without software?

Started with a Baofeng UV-5R myself to get acquainted with amateur radio, learned to program it using Chirp software. Later upgraded to a Yaesu FT-60R with RT Systems software - it's an older model but still rock-solid. If you go Baofeng, definitely get programming software and cable so you can easily load repeater channels instead of manual keypad programming.

The FT-65R is more rugged with better build quality and accessory options for around $120. Sometimes simple is better for learning - once you've used it awhile, you'll know what features you really want in your next radio.

Most new hams don't have a lot of money, so the cheaper radios are a good start to get on the air until you save enough to upgrade. Just expect it might get warm during long conversations and you may need to replace it eventually.
