Current Band Conditions - 20m Strong, Higher Bands Struggling?

Fellow hams, I've been monitoring the bands the past few days and noticed some interesting patterns. 20m has been consistently strong with solar flux at 158 and excellent DX opportunities throughout the day, but 12m and 10m seem to be closing quickly after sunset and poor at night. Anyone else seeing similar conditions?

I'm particularly curious about the K-index jumping to 4 with A-index at 50 - wondering if this unsettled geomagnetic activity is what's limiting the higher bands. With K-index at 1 showing very quiet geomagnetic field conditions and low noise, it seems like we should be seeing better 15m and 12m openings.

What are you all experiencing on your end? Any tips for maximizing contacts during these mixed conditions?

Try using FT8 and FT4 digital modes for weak-signal DX, especially on 10m and 12m. I've been having success with 20m through 15m during daylight, then switching to 80m and 40m at night for strong regional contacts. The geomagnetic disturbances definitely impact the higher bands more than the lower ones.

I'm relatively new to HF and trying to understand these propagation reports. What exactly does solar flux at 158 mean for us, and how does the sunspot number of 125 affect which bands I should focus on? Should I be avoiding certain bands during unsettled periods?

I've been using digital modes like FT8 and PSK31 for better reliability, especially focusing on 20m and 17m during the day. Watch for brief high-band openings during solar flux spikes - 12m and 10m can surprise you even when conditions look poor. Real-time monitoring is key!
