First HT as a new General - Overwhelmed by options!

Just passed my General exam last week and I'm ready for my first handheld! I'm completely overwhelmed by all the options - Baofeng UV-5R for budget, Yaesu FT-65R for reliability, or should I jump straight to digital with something like the Kenwood TH-D75A?

I'm mostly interested in local repeaters and maybe some APRS down the road. Don't want to break the bank but also don't want to buy twice. What would you recommend for someone just starting out?

My budget is around $200-300 if it means getting something that will grow with me. Thanks for any guidance! 73s

Congratulations on your General! For your first HT, I'd recommend the Yaesu FT-65R - it's that sweet spot between the cheap Baofengs and expensive digital rigs. Solid build quality, easy to program, and will serve you well for years. Save the digital experimentation for later when you know what you actually want.

I started with a UV-5R and honestly, the programming frustration nearly killed my enthusiasm for the hobby. Went with an FT-60R afterward and wished I'd started there. Spend a bit more upfront and get something user-friendly - the FT-65R is perfect for this.

If APRS interests you, consider the Kenwood TH-D75A despite the higher cost. Built-in GPS, excellent APRS functionality, and it supports D-STAR for digital experimentation. It's an investment but will definitely grow with your interests. I've had mine for two years and still discovering features!
