Comparing Q65 vs JT65 performance for 144MHz EME operations

QRA64 is 1-3 dB more sensitive than JT65, which is important for EME but much less so at HF. JT65 was designed for EME on VHF and higher bands, while Q65 is particularly effective for fast-fading signals including EME. Has anyone done side-by-side comparisons of these modes on 2m EME? Looking at real-world performance differences beyond the theoretical sensitivity improvements.

  • QSOs are possible at signal levels 10 to 15 dB below those required for CW

I've been running both modes for the past year. Q65 may replace JT65 for EME use over time, but currently JT65 still has much more activity. The 1-3dB sensitivity advantage of Q65 is real, but on a well-designed EME station it's often not the limiting factor - libration fading and polarization rotation dominate.

From my testing, Q65 offers a wide variety of timed sequence lengths and tone spacings for different propagation conditions. This flexibility is huge for EME where conditions vary dramatically. I'm seeing Q65-60A working well during deep QSB that would kill JT65 completely.

Still primarily using JT65B for EME because that's where most of the activity is. The setup is exactly the same as running WSJT-X locally - you're simply changing the mode from FT8 or FT4 to Q65 or JT65. I'll switch when I see more stations migrating to Q65, but for now JT65 gives me more QSO opportunities.
