anyone else doing the weekly 40m net tonight? looking for check-in tips

so ive been listening to our local ARES net on 40m for a couple months now and finally got my general ticket last week so i can actually participate. tonight is the first time im gonna try to check in and honestly im a little nervous about it. like i know its just radio but still, talking to a bunch of strangers on a net for the first time feels weird.

the net control usually goes through check-ins pretty fast and i keep second-guessing myself on what exactly to say. do i just give my call and say my name and QTH or is there like a specific format this particular net uses? i tried looking it up but the club website hasnt been updated since like 2019 so not super helpful. also is it bad form to check in late, like after the net has already started? i usually get home from work right around when they open the net so timing is tight.

any advice would be great, especially from people who remember their first net check-in

congrats on the general, that's awesome. okay so first thing -- don't stress about it, net controls have heard everything and they're not gonna judge you for being a little clunky the first time. most of them were there once too.

as for format, most voice nets just want your call sign, first name, and location. something like "W5XYZ, Tom, in Oklahoma City" and thats usually enough. if theres a traffic net or something more formal they might want signal report or if you have traffic to pass, but for a basic ARES check-in you're probably fine keeping it simple. just speak clearly and don't rush.

checking in late is totally fine. most nets have a late check-in period, the NCS will usually say something like "any late or mobile check-ins" at some point toward the end. just wait for that and jump in then. honestly the net control will probably appreciate that you waited for the right moment rather than just keying up in the middle of something. good luck tonight, let us know how it goes

oh man i remember my first net check in, completely blanked on my own callsign for like two seconds which was embarrassing but the NCS just waited and it was fine lol. one thing that helped me was literally writing out what i was going to say on a notepad before i keyed up. sounds silly but it works. also maybe listen for a few check-ins before yours so you can hear what format people are using, that way you can just kind of mirror it.
