Rate optimization strategies - when to abandon a run frequency?

Contest QSOs come in waves - one right after another, then nothing for several minutes before the next wave arrives. I struggle with knowing when to abandon a run frequency that's gone quiet versus waiting it out.

During last weekend's NAQP CW, I got on 80M early when there was only one other station, had my pick of frequencies, and as more operators came down to the band, my rate shot through the roof while my frequency remained clear. But I've also wasted time on dead frequencies.

My logging software shows the frequency sounds clear on my end, but it may not be clear in many other locations. What's your rule of thumb for CQ timeout periods? I've seen rate meters hit 250+ QSOs per hour during peak conditions - how do you maximize those golden opportunities?

If you're not getting responses after a reasonable time, don't waste time - either QSY to a better frequency or switch to search and pounce mode. I use a 5-minute rule during prime time, 10 minutes during slow periods. Your rate meter tells the story.

For domestic contests, even modest stations can usually find a hot band and run successfully, but DX contests are more challenging. Start S&P and see if you're getting people on first call - that's your signal strength indicator for whether running will work.

Make your exchange as concise as possible - evaluate every syllable, especially when your pileup is several stations deep. Automate your CQ message and use that opportunity to take a drink while the radio transmits. Efficiency during peak rate periods is everything.
