First QSO nerves - am I doing this right?

Got my Technician license two weeks ago and bought a Baofeng UV-5R to get started. Been listening to the local repeater for hours but I'm terrified to key up. Every time I hear someone call CQ, I freeze up and can't bring myself to respond.

Worried I'll mess up the phonetics or forget my call sign or something embarrassing. Does everyone go through this mic fright? Any tips for a brand new ham who's scared to make that first contact?

I had the same thing! Spent three weeks listening before I finally keyed up. What helped me was practicing - I'd rehearse what I was going to say out loud before pressing PTT. The local hams are super friendly once you get started.

If you're struggling with mic fright, the only way past it is getting some success under your belt. Start easy with a friend or trusted ham. Join your local club meeting first - meeting people face to face makes it easier on the air.
