ic7300 vs ft991a for someone coming from older rigs

been running a ts520 for like 15 years and finally ready to upgrade to something with digital modes built in. narrowed it down to these two but cant decide. the icom seems more popular but the yaesu has more bands built in which might be nice down the road

anyone made this jump from tube era stuff? wondering if the learning curve is gonna be brutal or if its pretty straightforward once you get past all the menu diving

I went from a swan 350 to the ic7300 about 3 years ago and honestly wish id done it sooner. Yeah theres menus but the basic operation is still just tune and talk. The waterfall display alone is worth it - you can see everything thats happening on the band. Built in tuner works great too, no more external box

The ft991a is nice but ive heard the receiver can get overwhelmed in contest situations if you have strong local signals. Depends on your QTH i guess

ft991a here and love it. sure the 7300 gets all the love but the 991 does 2m/70cm too which is handy for checking into nets. the touch screen took some getting used to coming from knobs and switches but now i prefer it for band changes and stuff

either way youre gonna be amazed at how quiet these modern rigs are compared to what youre used to
