80m dipole acting weird at my new QTH

so i moved to a new place couple months ago and put up my trusty 80m dipole that worked great at the old house. same wire, same balun, but now the swr is all over the place and it just sounds dead on 80. at the old place it was about 30 feet up between two trees, here ive got it at about 25 feet but the trees are closer together maybe 100 feet span instead of 120. ground here is a lot more clay too if that matters. anyone else run into this kind of thing after moving? starting to wonder if i need to retune the whole thing or if its just the different environment

Clay soil definitely changes things - much better RF ground than sandy stuff. Your antenna is probably seeing a different ground reflection pattern which messes with the radiation resistance. I'd start by checking the SWR across the whole band, bet you'll find the resonant point shifted down in frequency. Might need to trim a few inches off each end or add some capacitive loading if you cant make it physically longer.

yeah what he said about the clay soil is spot on. also that 5 foot difference in height might not seem like much but on 80m it can really change how the antenna couples to ground. i had similar issues when i moved and ended up having to do a complete retuning job. took me like 3 weekends of trial and error but now it works better than the old location actually
