raspberry pi for rotator control - anyone tried this?

been thinking about using a pi to control my antenna rotator instead of the ancient control box thats been acting up lately. found some python libraries that look promising but wondering if anyone has actually done this successfully. my rotator is an old alliance hd-73 and im not sure about the interface requirements

also saw some stuff about using gpio pins but honestly not sure if thats the right approach or if i need some kind of relay board in between

yeah i did this last year with my yaesu g-5500. used a pi 4 with a relay hat from adafruit and it works great. the tricky part was getting the position feedback working right but once you figure out the voltage divider setup its pretty straightforward

i can send you my python code if you want, its not pretty but it gets the job done. also make sure you use opto isolators if your rotator has any high voltage stuff going on

Why not just fix the control box? These old rotators are pretty reliable and parts are still available. I've seen too many homebrew automation projects that work great until they dont and then your stuck trying to debug code when all you want to do is turn the antenna

but if your dead set on it the alliance should be easy enough to interface since its just dc motor control
