crystal oscillator keeps drifting on my 40m cw rig

been working on this direct conversion receiver for 40m and the vfo just wont stay put. using a 7.030 crystal in a colpitts circuit but it drifts like crazy when it warms up. tried different caps in the tank but no luck so far

anyone dealt with this before? thinking maybe i need to go with a different oscillator design or add some kind of temperature compensation but not sure where to start

yeah crystal drift is a real pain especially in direct conversion stuff since you hear it right away. couple things to try - first make sure your crystal is getting good airflow, maybe add a small heatsink. also check if youre overdriving it, too much rf can cause frequency pulling

i had similar issues with a 20m rig and ended up switching to a ceramic resonator with better temp coefficient. not as stable as a good crystal but way better than what i was dealing with

What kind of caps are you using in the oscillator? If theyre ceramic disc types they probably have terrible temp drift too which makes the whole problem worse. NPO ceramics or silver mica would be much better. Also where is the crystal mounted - if its right next to any heat generating components that could be part of your problem.
