Need help with my first vanity callsign application

Just got my General license last month with callsign KD9XYZ and I'm thinking about applying for a vanity call. I know I can list up to 25 call signs in order of preference but I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the options. Should I really fill out all 25 slots to increase my chances? Also, I see there's a $35 application fee - is it worth it for someone just starting out? Any advice on choosing good Group C calls that might actually be available?

Definitely worth getting a vanity! I'd suggest using sites like RadioQTH or AE7Q to check availability before applying. The 1x3 N callsigns are popular because the suffix works well as initials. Don't feel pressured to use all 25 slots - I got my call with just 8 choices on my list.

Applications typically take 18 days to process so be patient! As General class you can apply for Group C or D format calls. I'd focus on calls that mean something to you - initials, hobby references, etc. The $35 is a small price for having YOUR call instead of what they assigned you.

Welcome to the hobby! Remember you must meet all FCC requirements as of the receipt date, including having the proper license class shown in the ULS. Since you just got General, double-check that it's updated in the system before applying. Good luck with your vanity quest!
