RMS gateway keeps timing out when trying to send longer messages

been trying to get my winlink setup dialed in better and im having issues with longer messages just timing out at the RMS gateway. short stuff like 73 how are you doing messages go through fine but anything over maybe 500 characters or so just sits there and eventually times out

running pat on linux with a ic7300 through rigctl and usually connect to the local VHF gateway about 15 miles away. signal reports are always good both ways so i dont think its an RF issue. wondering if theres some setting im missing or if the gateway itself has message size limits that arent obvious

anyone else run into this or know what might be going on

what's your data rate set to? if youre trying to push too much data too fast the gateway might just give up. also some of the older RMS gateways have pretty conservative timeouts especially on VHF where theres more traffic

try dropping down to 1200 baud or even 300 and see if that helps. takes forever but at least it gets through

Yeah I've seen this before with certain gateways, they seem to have different patience levels if you know what i mean. The one I use on 40m will sit there all day but the local VHF one gets cranky with anything substantial. You might also want to check if your TNC settings are doing any kind of compression or if pat is trying to be too aggressive with the packet size. Sometimes backing everything down to the most basic settings helps even if it seems like it should work fine at higher speeds.
