do you actually have to use phonetics every time or just when its hard to understand

so ive been licensed for about 4 months now and been doing mostly 2m local stuff but starting to get into HF a little bit and i keep hearing people use NATO phonetics like constantly, like even when conditions are perfectly clear they still go through the whole thing. my elmer told me to always use phonetics for my callsign but i see guys just rattling off their call without phonetics all the time too. is there like an actual rule about this or is it just personal preference? i dont want to sound like an idiot either way. also i was in a pileup last week trying to work a DX station and i panicked and forgot what November sounded like for a second which was embarassing

no hard rule on most bands, its just good practice especially when signals are marginal or theres QRM. on HF you'll quickly figure out that even what sounds like a perfectly clean signal to you might be getting pulled out of the mud on the other end. phonetics basically just make your callsign stick out. that said on local 2m repeaters where everyone already knows who you are its a bit overkill yeah.

the pileup thing is totally normal by the way, everybody blanks on a phonetic at some point. i once said "November" twice for the same letter and didnt even notice until someone pointed it out later. just keep using them and it becomes automatic after a while, like you wont even think about it.

honestly i went through a phase where i was mixing in non-standard phonetics like saying "ocean" instead of Oscar because i thought it sounded clearer and an older guy on the net corrected me pretty quick lol. stick to NATO, especially if you ever work any international stations because they'll expect it and anything else just causes confusion. the whole point is that everyone agreed on the same words so theres no ambiguity. "Kilo" and "Lima" for example are specifically chosen because they dont sound like anything else in a pile of static
