first ARES activation coming up and honestly feeling a bit nervous about it

so i just got my general last spring and joined our county ARES group back in august. been to maybe four or five of the weekly nets and did the intro training that our EC put together. felt pretty good about it all honestly.

but now theres an actual activation coming up — county emergency management is running a full scale exercise next weekend and they want us to staff three positions at the EOC plus have two operators in the field with the served agency teams. our EC asked if i wanted to take one of the EOC spots and i said yes before i really thought about it lol

im just not sure what to actually expect. like i know the basics, pass traffic, log everything, use the ICS forms, dont freelance. but sitting in a real EOC with actual emergency management people watching feels different than doing it on a tuesday night net. anyone been through their first activation and have any advice or things they wish they knew going in? also is it weird that im this nervous over a training exercise

oh man i remember my first one, i was way more nervous than the actual EOC staff lol. honestly the biggest thing i'd tell you is just relax and remember that you are there to serve them, not impress them. most emergency management folks have worked with ham operators before and they really just want someone reliable who shows up on time and doesnt cause problems. bring your own water and snacks because you might be there a while and the EOC coffee situation is always a mystery.

the ICS forms thing is huge, make sure you actually know how to fill out a ICS-213 under a little pressure because it sounds dumb but when someone is standing over you waiting for a message to go out your brain can go blank. we do a lot of drills in our group specifically for that. also write everything down even if it seems minor, your EC will appreciate it when they do the after action review. you're gonna do fine, first activations are always a little overwhelming but that's kind of the point of exercises right

being nervous is completely normal and honestly a good sign — means you're taking it seriously. ive seen new operators show up totally overconfident and those are usually the ones who talk too much on the radio or start offering opinions to the served agency when nobody asked. just be the quiet professional in the corner doing your job and youll be remembered as someone worth calling again.

one thing i'd add is know your gear cold before you walk in that door. nothing worse than fumbling with your radio settings in front of people. and if you dont know something just say so, dont guess on message traffic ever.
