confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — do i need all three?

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and im starting to get into chasing awards and i keep seeing people mention LoTW, eQSL, and then obviously the traditional paper cards and im just not sure what the actual difference is in terms of which ones count for what. like i know ARRL uses LoTW for DXCC and stuff but does eQSL count for anything official? and do i still need to send paper cards or is that just a nice-to-do thing at this point

my logging software is log4om and i think it can upload to both but i havent actually done it yet because i wanted to understand what i was getting into first. also is there like a cost involved with any of these? i dont mind paying if its worth it but i want to know upfront. sorry if this is a dumb question, just trying to figure out the whole confirmation ecosystem i guess

not a dumb question at all, this stuff confused me for a while too when i first got into chasing awards. so here's how i think about it — LoTW is basically the gold standard if your goal is DXCC or WAS through ARRL. you upload your logs signed with a certificate that ARRL issues you, and when the other station does the same thing and the QSO data matches up, it automatically confirms. no physical card needed. its free to use for uploading but if you want to apply for an award there is a fee involved for that part.

eQSL is a bit different, its more of a community thing and some awards do accept it but its generally not considered as authoritative as LoTW for the big ARRL awards. that said a lot of people use it and its nice to get the little graphic cards. i still use it because some ops only confirm there and not on LoTW.

paper cards are honestly just fun at this point in my opinion. some people love sending and recieving them, and for certain awards or older operators its still expected. i still send them when someone specifically requests a card via their QRZ page, but i dont go out of my way to send one for every contact anymore. get yourself set up on LoTW first, thats the most important one.

yeah what he said about LoTW being the main one for ARRL awards is right. one thing i'd add is that ClubLog is another one worth knowing about, some DXpeditions use it for online log checking and its free. i actually find myself checking ClubLog almost as much as LoTW these days just to see if a contact made it in before the cards even get confirmed.

log4om should handle all of this pretty well once you get the LoTW certificate sorted out, that part is honestly the most annoying step but you only do it once. after that uploading is pretty painless.
