first ARES activation ever - what should I expect?

so I just got my general last spring and joined the local ARES group a couple months ago. been going to the monthly nets and did the ICS-100 and 200 online courses like they asked. now our EC is saying there might be an actual activation coming up because of some severe weather stuff moving through the county next week and I might get called up to staff the EOC radio position.

honestly kind of nervous about it. I know I can handle basic HF and VHF/UHF operation fine but ive never done anything in an actual emergency management setting. like what do I actually DO when I get there, do they just hand me a radio and point me at a frequency or is there more setup involved. my EMCOMM experience is basically zero beyond practice nets so any advice from people whove actually done this would be really appreciated. also wondering if I should bring my own HB radio just in case or if they have gear at the EOC

congrats on your first potential activation, thats exciting even if its nerve wracking. the honest answer is it depends a lot on how your local ARES group is set up and what the EOC has for equipment. some counties have really well stocked comm rooms with dedicated radios already programmed and you basically just show up and operate. others... not so much.

my advice is bring your own HT programmed with all the local repeaters and simplex freqs you use on your nets, just as a backup. dont assume the gear there is ready to go. also bring a notepad and pen because message handling is a lot of writing down who said what and when, and your logging needs to be clean enough that whoever relieves you can pick right up.

the other thing I'd say is dont be afraid to tell your EC if youre unsure about something. better to ask a dumb question in the first five minutes than make an error in a real emergency. most EOC emergency managers appreciate hams who know their limits and communicate clearly, thats kind of the whole job honestly

yeah what he said, and also ICS forms. get familiar with ICS-213 specifically because youll probably be handling written messages in that format. the training courses touch on it but actually filling one out under a little pressure is different. maybe practice a few before you go.

I did my first activation about three years ago for a flood event and mostly I just sat at a desk monitoring a couple frequencies and relaying traffic between the EOC and a shelter about 8 miles away. not glamorous but it mattered. just stay calm and trust your training
