confused about vanity callsign process — do i just apply and wait?

okay so i just passed my general last month and i've been using my sequential call which is fine but honestly it's kind of a mouthful and i want something shorter if possible. i've been reading about vanity calls on the FCC ULS site and i feel like i'm going in circles trying to figure out how the whole thing actually works.

from what i can tell there's a window period where you apply and then if nobody else applies for the same call you just get it? but i'm not sure how long that takes or if there's any fee involved now (i heard the FCC started charging but i dont know if that applies to vanity too or just new licenses). also do you have to be a certain license class to get a shorter format call like a 1x2 or 2x1? i don't want to apply for something i'm not actually eligible for.

any help appreciated, been lurking here for a while and you guys usually know this stuff better than the FCC website explains it

yeah the process is actually pretty straightforward once you get your head around it. you apply through the FCC ULS system, there's a 30 day waiting period after a callsign becomes available before anyone can apply for it, and then once the application window closes they do a lottery if multiple people applied for the same one. if you're the only applicant you basically just get it.

the fee thing — yes there is a $35 fee now for vanity applications, same system they use for everything else. kind of annoying but it is what it is. as for the format, a 1x2 (like W1AB) or 2x1 (like WA1B) requires at least an Extra class license. with a General you're eligible for 1x3 format calls which are still way shorter than most sequential ones depending on your district. definitely worth checking what's available in your call district on the ULS or one of the third party sites like ae7q.com — that site is super useful for seeing what calls are available or coming up soon.

i went through this like a year ago so maybe i can help a little. the ae7q site someone probably mentioned is seriously the best resource, i spent way too long on the FCC site itself getting confused before i found it. one thing i'll add — when i applied i didn't realize you could list multiple callsigns in order of preference on the same application so i just picked one and kind of held my breath lol. not sure if that's still how it works but worth double checking before you submit because if your first choice gets snagged in the lottery you might be out the fee with nothing to show for it.
