solar flux has been nuts lately, anyone else noticing weird band conditions?

so ive been trying to work some DX the past couple weeks and the bands have been all over the place. like one evening 17m was absolutely dead, couldnt hear a thing, then the next morning i tuned across and there were stations from japan and australia coming in like they were next door. i dont fully understand the relationship between the solar flux index and whats actually happening on the bands -- i know higher SFI is generally better for the higher HF bands but its not always that simple right?

also noticed some days where the K index spikes and everything just falls apart. had a really promising opening on 15m the other day and then within like an hour it was gone, checked and sure enough the K index had jumped up. is that pretty much what causes that or is there more going on? been a ham for about 8 months so still getting my head around all this propagation stuff

yeah propagation is one of those things that takes a while to really get a feel for, but once it clicks its kind of addicting to follow. you basically have it right though -- SFI tells you how much the sun is ionizing the upper atmosphere, and the K index (or A index if you want a longer term picture) tells you how disturbed the geomagnetic field is. high SFI plus low K is basically the magic combo for good DX on the higher bands like 15, 17, 10 meters.

the tricky part is its not instant. a solar event can mess up conditions for a day or two after it happens, and sometimes the improvement after a storm can actually produce some really wild openings, people call it post-storm enhancement. i'd suggest bookmarking dxmaps.com and also checking the solar terrestrial activity report on hamqsl.com, they update pretty regularly and give you a feel for whats coming. once you start correlating what you see on the air with the numbers it starts to make more sense

honestly same boat here, been chasing DX for about a year and propagation still surprises me constantly. had a 10m opening last week that came out of nowhere, worked a station in south africa which is still kind of unbelievable to me lol. i've started just keeping an eye on the DX cluster and if i see spots popping up from regions that shouldnt be workable i just jump on and see whats happening rather than trying to predict it. sometimes the bands just do what they want
