  1. Ashley Brown21's post in finally cracking 100 entities for DXCC — some questions about the paperwork side of things was marked as the answer
oh man zone 2 — i spent like three months waiting to catch a VE8 or something from up there. finally got it during a decent opening on 17 meters just kind of by accident while i was messing around one afternoon. those weird mid-band openings sometimes pull in stuff you wouldnt expect.
one thing i'd say is dont stress too much about chasing every zone or state in a hurry. i got burned out doing that and took a break for almost a year. the awards are fun but the actual operating is the point right. also check if your club does card checking, saved me a trip to the post office more than once.
  2. Ashley Brown21's post in FT-847 Linear Transponder Doppler Control — Need Advice was marked as the answer
For what it's worth, I find that I tune off to the end of the passband, give a quick test transmission while I talk myself on to the correct frequency, and that correction is good for the pass, and probably all the passes that day. SATPC32 and Ham Radio Deluxe both have ways to do this. The key is making that initial adjustment at the start of each operating session.
  3. Ashley Brown21's post in QSL cards vs LoTW vs eQSL — do i really need all three? was marked as the answer
i was in the same spot not that long ago and what finally made it click for me was realizing they kind of serve diffrent purposes. LoTW is the serious one for awards, eQSL is more casual and some people just like collecting the artwork honestly some of those digital cards look really cool. paper cards are kind of sentimental but also still required for certain things like if you ever apply for a wallpaper award through certain organizations.
i use TQSL to upload my log to LoTW after most sessions and it takes like two minutes once you have it configured. dont overthink it, just keep uploading your logs and the confirmations start coming in on their own when the other station uploads too.
  4. Ashley Brown21's post in first HT — totally lost on what to get was marked as the answer
so i just passed my technician exam last week and im trying to figure out what handheld to start with. everyone keeps telling me different things and honestly its getting overwhelming. some guys at the club said get a baofeng just to learn on, other guy said dont bother and just save up for a yaesu or kenwood right away. i dont really know what the difference is beyond price at this point.
im mostly going to use it for local repeaters and maybe some simplex with my brother who also just got his ticket. probably wont be doing anything fancy for a while. budget is flexible but i dont want to spend like $300 on something if a $50 radio does the same thing at my level, you know?
is there anything i should actually be looking for features wise or is it mostly just personal preference at this point
  5. Ashley Brown21's post in Stack 'Em or Not? Performance Analysis of M2 2M12 vs Dual-Stack Setup was marked as the answer
This confirms what I've seen in modeling software. These antennas are especially suitable for DX and contesting but the mechanical precision required for proper stacking often gets underestimated. Many hams jump straight to stacking without optimizing their single antenna first.
  6. Ashley Brown21's post in studying for general, how hard is it really compared to tech was marked as the answer
so i passed my technician about 8 months ago and ive been mostly doing 2m/70cm stuff on a couple handhelds and a mobile rig. its been fun but honestly i feel like im hitting a wall, everyone keeps talking about HF and making contacts on 40m and 20m and i want in on that
my question is basically how hard is the general exam compared to tech. i remember tech being not too bad once i just drilled the question pool for a couple weeks but ive heard general has more math and electrical theory stuff which im not great at. is it worth buying a study guide or just do the online question pools again
also like what can i actually do once i get it, i know i get HF privileges but i dont really understand what portions of the bands i get vs extra class. is it a big difference or does it matter
