Each character is represented by a unique combination of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes), creating a rhythmic pattern that experienced operators can recognize instantly.

Koch\'s method, on the other hand, dictates that you should start learning at the desired speed - but you start with only two characters. Each session is five minutes long, and whenever you get 90% or more correct, you add another character.

The Koch approach, invented by German psychologist Ludwig Koch in the 1930s, fundamentally differs from traditional learning methods. The philosophy of the method is simple: You do not learn morse the same way you study and learn other subjects. Morse code is the translation between a stimulus, a sound in our case, into a reaction, in our case writing down the letter. Given this, there also follows that learning morse code is not a particularily conscious process, it is more like developing reflexes.

Today the Farnsworth method — named after Donald Farnsworth — is very common. The idea is to send the code at the target speed you would like to learn, but space it out so the average speed is much slower. For example, your coach might send at 15 words per minute but spaced out so it was really 5 words a minute. The Farnsworth method solves this by keeping characters at full speed but adding extra spacing. Think of it as sprint... rest... sprint... rest. You hear the characters at full speed, but you have plenty of time to process what you heard before the next character comes.

Many successful learners combine both methods! Start with Koch for the first 10-15 characters to build a strong foundation, then switch to Farnsworth to learn the remaining characters more quickly. Koch and Farnsworth are not alternatives, you can use them together. Koch learning order and Farnsworth spacing are a great combination.

Audio Training vs Visual Methods

Successful morse code learning relies primarily on audio training rather than visual memorization of dot-dash patterns. Morse Code is a collection of sounds not dots and dashes. When you send code with a key you send a sound. Remove any and all written forms of the Morse code from your practice location or radio shack. Morse code is an audible language not a written language. Do not refer to charts or written notes listing dots and dashes.

The biggest beginner mistake is counting dots and dashes. Train your ear to recognize each character as one sound pattern. These written forms of CW will cause you to develop a mental look up table. This look up table once developed is extremely hard to break and will slow your forward progress.

Audio-focused training develops automatic recognition patterns that bypass conscious analysis. Listen at a character speed of at least 22 -25 words per minute. The faster character speed allows you to hear the sound of the character and not the dots and dashes. This approach prevents the development of counting habits that limit speed progression and interfere with natural rhythm recognition.

You do not have to concentrate all the time on the Morse as your subconscious brain is working hard to learn what it hears. Passive listening to morse code content, such as news broadcasts or practice texts, helps reinforce character recognition patterns without conscious effort.

Modern technology offers numerous excellent tools for morse code instruction. Just use Koch method on LCWO at 20 wpm. Use Koch because it\'s the one for which there are the most tools, including LCWO, the most convenient one. Setting Realistic Practice Schedules

If you stay consistent for 15 to 25 minutes a day, most learners can build reliable character recognition in a few months. Practice 10 minutes a day. Every day. And keep at it. Consistency proves more important than duration for effective morse code learning.

Do this during a five minute session. If you have jotted down the characters with at least 90 percent success rate then throw in one more character and repeat the process. Short, frequent sessions prevent fatigue and maintain concentration while allowing adequate processing time for new information.

Weekly progression should focus on expanding character sets rather than increasing speed. Add new characters only after roughly 90% copy accuracy. If your progress stalls, do not immediately increase speed. First tighten accuracy and reduce confusion pairs. Add new characters only when your recent sessions stay near your target accuracy.

Effective practice schedules accommodate individual learning patterns and life circumstances. Morning learners often benefit from brief sessions before work, while others prefer evening practice when the mind is less cluttered. The key lies in establishing routine that becomes habitual rather than burdensome.

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Starting too slow: very low character speed teaches counting, then you must unlearn it. Adding characters too quickly: weak foundations cause confusion storms later. Practicing randomly: no progression model means no measurable improvement. These fundamental errors can significantly impede learning progress and create habits that become difficult to overcome.

Throw away the pencil. Writing down what you hear, then reading what you wrote removes the element of an audible language. Your mechanical ability to write legibly will vastly slow your head copy speed. Over-reliance on writing prevents development of head copy skills essential for conversational CW operation.

Years of experience show that the number one trick is not to write the character as soon, and fast, as you can. Wait until the next character has started, then write the character down. I cannot over emphasize this enough. Write slowly, make sure the writing lags one character — preferably more. This is perhaps harder learn as the code itself but is absolutely necessary to be able to receive faster speeds later on.

Ignoring weak patterns: repeated misses on the same character pairs cap your speed. Skipping real-context practice: letters alone are not enough for head copy in CW traffic. Regular assessment of problem areas and targeted practice on difficult character combinations prevents plateaus and ensures continued improvement.
