FCC License Classes Explained (Technician, General, Extra)

There are three active license classes: Technician (entry-level), General, and Amateur Extra. As of 2026, the amateur radio licensing system in the United States features three active operator classes—Technician, General, and Amateur Extra—each granting progressively broader operating privileges on designated frequency bands and emission modes, as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under 47 CFR Part 97.

Most new amateur operators start at the Technician Class and then may advance to the General Class or Amateur Extra Class operator license.

Technician Class License

The Technician class license is the entry-level license of choice for most new ham radio operators. To earn the Technician license requires passing one examination totaling 35 questions on radio theory, regulations and operating practices. The license gives access to all Amateur Radio frequencies above 30 megahertz, allowing these licensees the ability to communicate locally and most often within North America. It also allows for some limited privileges on the HF (also called "short wave") bands used for international communications.

General Class License

The General class license grants some operating privileges on all Amateur Radio bands and all operating modes. This license opens the door to world-wide communications. Earning the General class license requires passing a 35 question examination. General class licensees must also have passed the Technician written examination.

Amateur Extra Class License

The Amateur Extra class license conveys all available U.S. Amateur Radio operating privileges on all bands and all modes. Earning the license is more difficult; it requires passing a thorough 50 question examination. Extra class licensees must also have passed all previous license class written examinations.

Before receiving a license grant, you must pass an examination administered by a team of volunteer examiners (VEs). The VEs determine the license operator class for which you are qualified through the testing of your skills and abilities in operating an amateur station. Find a ham radio exam session in your area or take the exam online. In-person and online tests are given regularly. Register with an ARRL VEC team for your exam and receive your license in 24 to 48 hours.

There is a $35 application fee that applies to new amateur radio licenses. However, ARRL will cover the one-time $35 FCC application fee for new license candidates younger than 18-years old for tests administered under the auspices of the ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (ARRL VEC). The $35 FCC application fee will be reimbursed after the ARRL VEC receives the completed reimbursement form and the new license has been issued by the FCC.

Popular beginner-friendly handheld options include:

Once you've gained experience with handheld radios, many operators expand to mobile or base station equipment. For portable and go-box setups, the Yaesu FT-891 is one of the best starter radios. For a home station, the Icom IC-7300 offers simplicity and excellent performance for new operators.

For Parks on the Air (POTA), I recommend portable QRP radios like the Icom IC-705, Xiegu G90, or Elecraft KX2. Although budget is an important factor, available space, height, the opinion of your partner and neighbors, and local regulations are equally crucial. You may have a substantial budget, but if your partner is not comfortable with placing a mast on the house, the aforementioned 50/50 guideline may not be applicable. Additionally, if you plan to transmit on HF and VHF, you often need different antennas. For VHF and higher, a vertical antenna is sufficient if you want to transmit locally or via repeaters.

Power Supplies and Accessories

Modern 100-watt transceivers often require a 13.8-volt power supply that can deliver at least 23 to 25 amperes of continuous current. OLder transceivers mostly need 20 to 21 ampers. Some switching power supplies may cause interference, but most are good. Your local ham radio shop can provide good advice.

When you get a ham radio, you need some equipment to make it work as you want. The four main pieces of equipment that radios come with include a power supply, antenna, transceiver and antenna tuner. Transceiver – As the name suggests, a transceiver is a combination of a receiver and a transmitter. This is what the ham radio is about mostly, so of the total cost that you will pay, about a third is the cost of the transceiver.

The budget plays a significant part. While one ham may have to work with used equipment, another ham might fill his shack to the ceiling with transceivers. However, I would advise against the latter as a newbie.

Amateur Radio Frequency Allocations

Amateur radio frequency allocation is done by national telecommunication authorities. Globally, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) oversees how much radio spectrum is set aside for amateur radio transmissions. Individual amateur stations are free to use any frequency within authorized frequency ranges; authorized bands may vary by the class of the station license.

HF, VHF, and UHF Bands Explained

Ham radio operators have access to various frequency bands, each suited for different types of communication: VHF (Very High Frequency): 144-148 MHz band, great for local communication.
