What Is an Operator License Grant

An operator license grant is the official FCC authorization that allows an individual to operate an amateur radio station. Once granted, you are legally allowed to act as a control operator.

Who Can Get Licensed

Individuals Only

Operator licenses are issued to people, not organizations.

No Age Limit

Anyone can get licensed if they pass the exam.

Must Pass Exam

You must demonstrate knowledge of rules and operating practices.

How the License Is Granted

The licensing process works as follows:

  • Take and pass an FCC-approved amateur radio exam
  • Exam results are submitted by Volunteer Examiners (VEs)
  • The FCC issues your license and callsign
  • Your license appears in the FCC database
You cannot transmit until your license is officially granted and appears in the FCC system.

License Classes

Technician

Entry-level license with VHF/UHF privileges and limited HF access.

General

Expanded HF privileges for worldwide communication.

Amateur Extra

Full access to all amateur bands and privileges.

What Your License Allows

  • Operate as a control operator
  • Transmit on authorized frequencies
  • Use assigned callsign
  • Operate within your license class privileges

Your license class determines which bands, frequencies, and modes you are allowed to use.

Common Mistakes

  • Transmitting before the license is issued
  • Assuming passing the test alone gives authority
  • Operating outside your license privileges
  • Not understanding class limitations
  • You must pass an exam to get licensed
  • The FCC must officially grant your license
  • Your callsign is assigned upon approval
  • Your privileges depend on your license class
Summary
