Finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend — some questions after the fact

So i finally got off my butt and did a WWFF activation at a state forest about 45 minutes from my house. Ive been meaning to do one for probably two years now and just never pulled the trigger. Anyway i set up my KX3 with a random wire antenna strung between two trees, got my 44 contacts in about 90 minutes and the whole thing was honestly just really enjoyable. Way more relaxed than a POTA activation ive done before, fewer people calling in but the ones that did were super chill.

A couple things im not totally clear on though. Do i need to submit the log somewhere specific for WWFF or does it just go through the same ADIF upload process? I looked at the wwff.eu site and it honestly confused me a bit. Also is there a difference between a WWFF reference and a KFF reference when im activating in the US? I saw both mentioned on different pages and cant tell if its the same thing or if i need to log under one vs the other. And one more thing — someone on the air told me i should have spotted myself on the WWFF spotter but i didnt even know that was a thing until after i was already packed up. Does not spotting yourself hurt your activation count or is it just to attract chasers?

congrats on the first one, its a great program. ok so for US activations you're dealing with KFF references which are the Flora Fauna USA program, and those logs get uploaded to the KFF system which then feeds into the global WWFF database. so basically you want to go to florафауна.us (or just google KFF ham radio) and register there if you havent already, then upload your ADIF through their portal. the wwff.eu site is the global umbrella but for US stuff KFF is really the one you deal with day to day.

spotting yourself is really just for attracting chasers during the activation, it doesnt affect whether your activation counts. you need the 44 QSOs regardless and those are verified through your log. but yeah next time throw yourself on the WWFF spotter or even pota.app works too since a lot of chasers watch both. youll probably fill your log faster. sounds like you did great for a first outing though, random wire between trees is a perfectly fine setup for a forest activation.

i just started chasing WWFF contacts this year and honestly the spotting thing makes such a huge difference from the chaser side. when i see someone pop up on the spotter i can tune in right away, otherwise unless im just scanning around ill completely miss an activation. so youre not penalized for not spotting but you definitely get way more contacts when you do. i use the wwff.eu spotter and also keep an eye on pota.app since like the previous person said theres a lot of overlap in who chases both programs.

also i had no idea there were this many parks and natural areas with references until i started looking into WWFF, the KFF list is huge. kind of makes me want to start activating too instead of just chasing.
