first real contest coming up, kind of overwhelmed by all the options

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i keep seeing people talk about CQ WW and Field Day and SOTA and honestly it all kind of blurs together for me. like i know Field Day is a big deal, my local club did one and i showed up for a few hours but mostly just watched because i didnt really know what i was doing. and then someone mentioned CQ WW is coming up and said i should try it but i dont even know if my station is good enough or if theres like a minimum skill level you need.

im running a Kenwood TS-590SG into a 40m dipole in my attic which i know isnt ideal but its what i got. would i just be embarrassing myself trying to jump into something like CQ WW or is it actually okay for newer folks to just get on and try? also whats the difference between the SSB and CW weekends, do i need to be able to copy CW to participate in the CW one or can i just listen around

also SOTA looks really fun but thats a whole different thing right, not really a contest per se more like an award program? anyway if anyone has advice on which of these i should actually try first id appreciate it

Jump in on CQ WW SSB, seriously just do it. Nobody cares if youre new, the exchange is literally just your call sign and your zone number, thats it. You give them 59 and your zone and move on. With a TS-590 youre honestly better equipped than a lot of people who show up to these things. Attic dipole might limit your score but you'll still make contacts, especially on 40m during the evenings when europe starts coming in.

For the CW weekend yeah you'd want to be able to at least copy at maybe 10-15 wpm to really participate, but plenty of people just tune around and listen even if they dont submit a log. Thats actually a decent way to practice honestly. And yes youre right that SOTA is different, its an awards program where you activate summits and other people try to chase you, some folks do both contesting and SOTA but they're separate things. Start with Field Day or CQ WW SSB, get your feet wet, worst case you make 20 contacts and learn a ton.

dont stress about the station, ive worked CQ WW with way worse than a 590 and an attic dipole lol. the first time i did it i had a mobile whip on a mag mount on my balcony railing and still managed to log like 80 something contacts over the weekend. the whole point for most of us is just having fun and seeing how far your signal gets.

one thing i'd say though is look up your ITU zone before the weekend so you're not fumbling around during the actual contest trying to figure it out. also if your local club has a contest station sometimes they let newer members operate under the club callsign which is a really good way to learn without the pressure of running your own station. worth asking around
