    so my neighbor got his license last year and basically convinced me to try it out and now im trying to figure out how to study for the technician exam. i downloaded a bunch of stuff but honestly its kind of overwhelming. like i found the question pool pdf on the arrl site or maybe it was the fcc site i cant remember but theres like 400 something questions and i dont know if i should just memorize all of them or actually try to understand the material. also someone told me to use hamstudy.org but then another person said to get the arrl tech manual. do i need both? i feel like im overcomplicating this but i just want to pass the first time and not have to retake it

    High SWR with correct resonant frequency typically indicates impedance mismatch, not element length issues. Start by checking your matching section - that 300Ω ladder line length is critical. Try adjusting it in small increments first before touching the radiating elements.

    it does NOT calm down, just so you know. i did my first CQ WW back in like 2009 and i still get that same stupid grin when the rate meter spikes. 380 contacts on a wire dipole for your first time is honestly really solid, a lot of people quit after a couple hours when they cant figure out why nobody is answering their CQ. the trick you probably already figured out is finding a clear frequency and holding it rather than just search and pouncing the whole time, you get way more multipliers that way once the rate drops.
    ARRL DX in february is a great next step, the exchange is simpler too just signal report and your state or power level depending which side of the border you are on. and yeah try the CW side even if youre slow, people are generally patient during contests more than you might expect, especially at lower rates on sunday afternoon. Field Day in june is a completely different vibe too if you havent done that with a club yet, more of a social thing but still a good time.

    the ft-950 and 7300 combo is actually not bad for this, ive seen worse. one thing people dont talk about enough is the logging software side — N1MM+ has SO2R support built in and getting that configured right before the contest is honestly half the battle. the radio focus switching, the audio routing, knowing which rig is transmitting at any given moment, that stuff will mess you up if you havent practiced it outside of a real contest
    also worth mentioning that even if you dont do true SO2R you can get some of the benefit by just using the second radio for passive monitoring, like let it sit on 40 while youre running 20 and just keep an eye on the bandmap. not as efficient but way less stressful and no transmit intermod issues to deal with

    yeah that's a frustrating one, 10m openings can close up pretty fast especially into europe from the east coast once the greyline moves through. DXMaps has an alert feature i think but honestly the thing i've found most useful is just joining a discord or a local club chat where people are actively posting when stuff is happening in real time. the cluster alone is kind of laggy for that purpose.
    also worth looking at VHF propagation beacons on 28.200 area, there are a bunch of beacons that run 24/7 and if you start hearing those it usually means the band is coming alive. once you get the feel for when the band typically opens based on the season and where the sun is you start to anticipate it a little better. this time of year late afternoon local time tends to be good for transatlantic on 10. dont get discouraged, the band is gonna be good for another year or two at least with where we are in the cycle

    I struggled with this as a new Tech! The breakthrough was practicing with QSO logging software that has phonetic displays. Also, using "Sierra" for 'S' and "Foxtrot" for 'F' help distinguish between similar-sounding letters. Don't be embarrassed to go slow at first.

    yeah the logging thing is a real struggle, we ran into the exact same problem during our SET last year. what ended up helping us was having whoever is handling radio NOT also be responsible for the formal log — even if it's just one extra person with a clipboard writing down times and message numbers. if you really can't spare the body, some guys use a voice recorder running in the background so they can reconstruct the log afterward, not perfect but better than gaps.
    the battery thing drives me absolutely nuts. we actually made it a rule that every go-kit gets a quick check the night before any activation or drill, not just a 'yeah probably fine' kind of check but actually power it on and verify. took one embarrassing moment at a real weather event to get everyone on board with that. sounds like your group had a pretty realistic experience honestly, the messy first hour is kind of normal and if you came out of it with a list of things to fix that's a win in my book.

    tail-ending is real but you have to be careful with it because if you clip the end of the contact you'll just annoy the DX op and get skipped intentionally. the timing thing you figured out is basically the same idea though. what i've found is the real edge is figuring out the DX operators listening pattern — some of them sweep high to low, some do the opposite, some just pick random spots. after a few QSOs in a row you can usually hear where they're going and set your VFO ahead of time. takes patience but works way better than just calling blind in the middle.
    also 600w into a 4el is more than enough for most paths when conditions cooperate. a lot of times guys with kilowatts and stacks still get blown out because they're calling at the wrong time. power helps less than people think once you're above a certain threshold.
