Winlink setup - RMS gateway confusion, am i doing this wrong

 Loading...

so ive been trying to get Winlink working for a few weeks now and i think i finally understand most of it but the gateway stuff is still kind of confusing me. basically i set up Winlink Express on my laptop, got it talking to my IC-7300 through a SignaLink USB, and i can see the waterfall in Vara HF and it looks fine. the problem is when i try to actually connect to an RMS gateway it either times out or i get a partial session and then it drops.

i checked the gateway list and im targeting ones that show green or recently active, and im in the midwest so there should be decent propagation to at least a few of them. tried 20m and 40m at different times of day. sometimes the handshake starts and i can see VARA doing its thing but then it just falls apart maybe 30 seconds in. the message i was trying to send is pretty small, just a test message to my own callsign basically.

is this a common thing when youre first starting out or am i missing something in the configuration. also not totally sure if my RMS hybrid settings are set right, i kind of just left those at default. any ideas would be appreciated, been banging my head on this for a while now.

the timeout thing happened to me constantly when i first set up VARA HF and honestly it was my audio levels causing most of it. the SignaLink is great but you really have to dial in the drive level carefully — i had mine cranked too high and the TX was just splattering all over and the receiving gateway couldnt decode it properly. try turning the SignaLink drive knob way down, like almost minimum, and then slowly bring it up while watching your ALC on the radio. you want basically zero ALC movement. also make sure youre not running more than like 25-30 watts for VARA, its a digital mode and the duty cycle will cook your finals if you go too high anyway but more importantly the gateways seem to handle weaker cleaner signals better than loud dirty ones in my experience.

also double check that your clock is synced. Winlink is picky about time and if your PC clock is off by more than a minute or two sessions will drop for seemingly no reason. theres a setting in Winlink Express to sync to internet time, just do that before every session if youre not sure.

yeah what he said about the audio levels, that fixed like 80% of my issues too. one other thing though — are you connecting to the gateway via a direct P2P connection or through the Winlink network normally? because if youre trying to do peer to peer to an RMS thats not actually set up for P2P youll just get dropped. sounds dumb but i made that mistake early on. the channel selection guide in Winlink Express basically does this for you if you let it pick the gateway automatically based on propagation, i stopped manually picking gateways and just let it do its thing and my connect rate went way up.
