Jessica Miller89's post in finally got AO-73 working but my doppler correction is still a mess was marked as the answeryeah manual doppler on a linear transponder is uh... a lot. i tried it for like two weeks before i finally got gpredict talking to my radio and honestly the difference is night and day. the inverting transponder makes it feel even more chaotic because your instincts are wrong until you build new ones basically.
one thing that helped me before i got the software working was printing out a doppler table for the specific pass from heavens-above or gpredict beforehand and just working off that. its not perfect but at least you have a rough schedule of how much to shift and when instead of guessing in real time.

Jessica Miller89's post in APRS beacon showing up on aprs.fi but messages not going through?? was marked as the answerhad the exact same problem when i first set mine up. turned out the igate near me was receive-only, couldnt inject back onto RF at all. you can check on aprs.fi by clicking on the igate and seeing if it says bidirectional or just receive. once i found a proper two way gate things started working a lot better for messages. beacons dont need that because they just go up and get heard, but messages need the whole path to work both ways.

Jessica Miller89's post in SSB audio always sounds muddy on my end - what am I missing was marked as the answerthe room thing is more of a factor than people admit. reflective surfaces cause comb filtering and it just makes everything sound weird and phasey, especially in the mids. a moving blanket behind you or even just a bookshelf full of books helps a lot more than buying a fancy mic.
on the 7300 specifically the TX eq is actually pretty capable if you dig into it. i run a slight cut around 200-300hz to tighten up the low end and then a gentle boost somewhere around 2kHz which is right where speech intelligibility lives. and yeah pull the compression back, 4 might be fine but watch your ALC meter while youre transmitting into a dummy load, you dont want it pinned. a little ALC action is fine, a lot means youre overdriving it and that could be whats causing the muddy sound more than anything else.
also worth checking if TX bandwidth in the menu matches what you think it does, theres a few settings in there that interact and its easy to have something set from a previous experiment that you forgot about

Jessica Miller89's post in first HT - totally lost on which one to get was marked as the answeri got a uv5r when i first started and its been fine tbh. programmed it with chirp which took maybe an hour to figure out but now its easy. only thing i'd say is the stock antenna that comes with it is pretty mediocre, a nagoya na-771 is like 12 bucks on amazon and makes a noticeable difference on weaker repeaters. so even if you go the cheap route just factor in a few bucks for a better antenna and youre good

Jessica Miller89's post in confused about what i can and cant transmit on as a tech license was marked as the answeri was in the same boat when i first got my ticket lol. the ARRL band plan chart saved me, seriously just download it. also once you get comfortable maybe think about going for general, the upgrade exam isnt that bad and it opens up so much more HF. i did mine like 2 months after my tech and it was worth it

Jessica Miller89's post in modified my IC-7300 and honestly cant believe i waited this long was marked as the answerthis is kind of what im worried about with my own 7300, i want to do the TCXO but i've never really done internal radio mods before, just antenna stuff and external accessories. how difficult is the TCXO install on a scale of like... replacing a car stereo to something that requires actual electronics experience? i can solder decent enough but i dont want to brick a radio i rely on for nets

Jessica Miller89's post in first QRP build — ended up way more fun than i expected was marked as the answerso i finally got around to building one of those 40m pixie kits, the cheap ones you can get for like 3 or 4 bucks shipped. i honestly expected it to be kind of a disappointment because how much can you really do with 500mw right? but i ended up making contact with a guy in ohio from my backyard in pennsylvania on my first real attempt and i just sat there kind of stunned for a minute.
the kit itself was pretty straightforward, took me maybe an hour and a half including my terrible soldering on the first few joints which i had to redo. the direct conversion receiver is noisy and the transmit frequency drifts a bit when it warms up but honestly for learning purposes its been amazing. i can actually hear whats happening on the band and understand what im doing in a way that using my regular radio never really taught me.
anyway i guess im asking has anyone else gone down this rabbit hole because ive been looking at the mcHF and some of the other more serious QRP builds and i feel like i could spend the rest of my life just building radios at this point. also is there a good way to stabilize the frequency drift on something like the pixie or is it just a fundamental limitation of the design?

Jessica Miller89's post in can you actually get fined for transmitting on the wrong freq or is that just a myth was marked as the answerso ive been licensed for about 8 months now (general class) and my elmer keeps telling me to be really careful about staying within my privileges and not accidentally keying up on a frequency im not supposed to use. i get that, but then someone at the club meeting last week said the FCC basically never actually does anything about it and its all just theoretical enforcement. like the last time someone actually got a notice of apparent liability was years ago or something.
so which is it? is Part 97 enforcement actually a real thing that happens or is it kind of like a speed limit nobody really enforces? i dont want to just ignore the rules obviously but im trying to figure out how seriously to take the "youll get fined" warnings. also does it matter what band or what kind of violation we're talking about? genuinely not sure how any of this works in practice

Jessica Miller89's post in first SOTA attempt did not go as planned lol was marked as the answerso i finally did my first summit activation last weekend, W4T/SU-001, and man i was not prepared for how much wind there would be up top. had my KX2 and a linked dipole and spent like 20 minutes just trying to get the thing strung up between two trees that were way too far apart. ended up just propping one end on my hiking pole and calling it good enough.
got 4 QSOs before my fingers went numb and i bailed. still counts right? i think i needed like 4 minimum so i literally squeaked by. going to try again next month with better gloves and maybe a shorter antenna setup, the linked dipole was kind of a pain to deal with on a windy ridge

Jessica Miller89's post in vanity callsign question — how long does this actually take was marked as the answerI went through this process about two years ago and the FCC site is genuinely terrible at explaining it clearly, so don't feel bad. One thing that helped me was using one of the third party callsign lookup tools — I forget which one exactly but there are a few that will show you the application window status and how many other people have applied for the same call. That saved me from applying for one that already had like four other applicants in the queue for it.
Also just heads up the $35 fee is now a thing, wasn't always that way. Small thing but if you haven't looked into it recently just be aware.

Jessica Miller89's post in SO2R finally clicked for me after years of resisting it — some thoughts was marked as the answeryeah the mental part is 100% the bottleneck, the hardware people obsess over it but honestly once you have basic interlocking sorted the gains come from operating discipline not better filters or whatever. what worked for me was actually practicing it outside of contests — just running two radios casually on a weekend, not even chasing points, just getting comfortable switching attention back and forth. sounds dumb but it genuinely trained the muscle memory.
on the 15/20 bleedthrough, are you running a bandpass filter set? if youre not using something like the Array Solutions or W3NQN filters between the radios and the antennas that could easily be your problem. the microHAM interlock handles the amp keying and prevents transmitting simultaneously but it doesnt do anything about RF coupling if your antennas are close together or sharing a common feedline. whats your antenna situation look like? if both are on the same tower thats probably your culprit regardless of the radio setup.

Jessica Miller89's post in studying for tech license, is the hamstudy website enough or do i need a book was marked as the answerso ive been wanting to get my technician license for a while now and finally decided to just do it. started using hamstudy.org and its been pretty good i think but my uncle who got his license like 20 years ago keeps telling me i should buy the ARRL handbook or one of those study guides. i dunno though, the question pool is right there online and the practice tests seem pretty close to the real thing from what people say.
my main worry is i dont really understand some of the electrical stuff, like the ohms law questions and the ones about antennas, i just kind of memorize the answers without really knowing why. is that fine or will that come back to bite me later. the test is in about 3 weeks at the local club.
