Step-by-step guide: Setting up effective CW practice routine

Here's my proven daily CW practice structure that got me from zero to 15 WPM in 3 months:

  • Start with Koch method trainer (G4FON or LCWO work great)
  • Character speed: 20 WPM minimum, effective speed: 5 WPM initially
  • Practice 15-20 minutes daily - consistency is everything
  • Master 2 characters to 90% accuracy before adding next one
  • Don't write individual letters - aim for instant character recognition

What specific practice tools and timing have worked best for you folks? Looking to refine this further based on real experiences.

The Morse Machine setting really helped drive letters home with repetition at your own speed. Once you have characters, push yourself just past comfort level with lessons. I practiced during lunch breaks and it worked great with busy schedule.

Great routine! Little practice often, preferably each day, is far better than large amounts once a week - persistence is needed as it takes time and determination. I also listen to slow CW transmissions on 80m and 40m bands for real-world practice.
