Mike Rodriguez's post in can you actually get in trouble for this or is it just a guideline was marked as the answerok so ive been reading through part 97 trying to understand what actually has consequences vs whats more like a suggestion and honestly its kind of confusing. like there are all these sections about station identification and operating outside your license class and whatever but i dont really know how strictly any of this is enforced in practice. a guy at my club was saying the FCC basically never goes after individual hams unless its something really serious but another guy said he knows someone who got a notice of apparent liability which sounds pretty scary. im not trying to do anything wrong i just want to know what the realistic risk is if you accidentally mess something up vs like willfully ignoring the rules. is there a difference in how they treat that?

Mike Rodriguez's post in dipole vs vertical for 40m — is the height difference really that big a deal was marked as the answer25 feet for a 40m dipole isnt doing you any favors for DX thats for sure, youre right about the NVIS thing. but i'd be careful assuming the vertical is automatically better. i put up a 43 foot vertical with 32 radials last spring and yeah the low angle stuff improved but i also picked up way more noise. the dipole actually had a quieter receive on a lot of bands which i didn't expect. for working europe from the midwest on 40 the vertical does seem to give me a bit of an edge on the signal reports but its not night and day. i think people oversell how much the radial count matters past a certain point — going from 16 to 32 i noticed almost nothing honestly. what matters more is that you get them on the ground and not floating in the air.

Mike Rodriguez's post in our county ARES drill last weekend went sideways in a good way — lessons we didnt expect was marked as the answerso we ran a simulated disaster exercise last Saturday, scenario was a major flooding event that knocked out all repeaters in the southern part of the county and we had to coordinate shelter-to-EOC traffic using only simplex and a couple HF links. about 14 operators showed up which honestly was more than i expected.
the part that surprised everybody — including the EC — was how fast things broke down once we actually had message traffic flowing. like in theory we all knew ICS forms and the net protocol but when three people are trying to check in at the same time on simplex with marginal signals and someone at the shelter needs to relay health-and-welfare info, it got real messy real fast. nobody was really at fault it just exposed that we hadnt practiced actual traffic handling under any kind of simulated stress, just the checkin/checkout stuff.
the other thing that came up was battery power. two of our guys thought they had fresh batteries in their HTs and they didnt. one guys radio died maybe 90 minutes in. we wrote that up in the AAR as a big item — you have to actually TEST your backup power before any exercise, not just assume.
anyway curious if others have run drills that surfaced stuff like this, especially around message handling or just the chaos of real-time coordination. we're trying to build a better training pipeline and id love to hear what worked for other groups.

I've got version 2.3.1 running on Ubuntu 22.04 with a SignaLink USB interface to my IC-7300.
The problem: My station isn't properly responding to @ALLCALL queries or group messages directed to @EMCOMM. I've added @EMCOMM to my groups list in Settings, enabled Auto Reply, and have both Heartbeat Network and HB acknowledgments turned on. Direct messages work fine, and I can send group messages that others receive.
When I watch the activity window, I see other stations successfully responding to group queries with message counts (like "MSG 3"), but my station stays silent. Has anyone encountered similar issues with group messaging setup? I'm wondering if it's a timing issue with the decode cycles or something in my audio configuration.

I'd recommend downloading their frequency chart and keeping it handy. As you get comfortable with HF, you'll develop a feel for where different activities cluster - CW down low, phone in the middle, digital modes in their designated segments. The band edges become second nature after a while.

QRZ always threw me off because it sounds like it should mean something else but its just someone asking whos calling them, usually the DX station running a pileup. the other one that got me was QSK which is full break-in CW, didnt even know what break-in meant at the time lol. just keep listening and it clicks eventually

That's a great option to build a shack around. If you want one radio to do everything, the 991A gives you more flexibility than the HF-only IC-7300.

The IC-7300 seems to be constantly sold because it is probably the best selling HF radio in the history of amateur radio. There are thousands of them out there. The abundance of used units means many are upgrading, not necessarily having problems.

I add sending practice with a keyer once I have the receiving down solid.
