Repeater etiquette question - how long should I pause between transmissions?

I've noticed that our local repeater sometimes gets tied up in long conversations, and I'm not sure about proper timing. I know repeaters have courtesy tones and need time to reset between transmissions, but what's considered appropriate?

Should I be waiting for a specific amount of time, or just listening for the courtesy beep? Also, when is it okay to break into an ongoing conversation if I have something important to add?

Don't monopolize the repeater - if others are turning off their radios because they can hardly get a word in, something's wrong. Good repeater citizenship means being aware of others wanting to use the frequency too.
