finally did the TX mod on my 7300 — worth it or am i imagining things

 Loading...

so ive been putting this off for like two years because i was nervous about voiding warranty and all that but the warranty expired anyway so i went ahead and did the expanded TX mod on my IC-7300 last weekend. the one where you jumper the two points on the main board to unlock the out of band transmit. pretty straightforward honestly took maybe 20 minutes including finding my reading glasses.

anyway after that i also went down a rabbit hole and ended up doing the internal speaker upgrade too, swapped in one of those aftermarket 4 ohm units that a few people have talked about on here before. the stock speaker is kind of tinny and the replacement does sound noticeably fuller on received audio at least on SSB. hard to say if its placebo but my wife even said it sounded better and she has zero interest in radio so that felt like a real data point.

what mods have other people actually found worthwhile on their rigs vs the ones that sound good on paper but dont really move the needle in practice? i keep seeing people talk about the ref oscillator mods for better frequency stability but honestly at HF i cant tell if that matters unless youre doing WSPR or something really narrow

the ref oscillator thing on the 7300 is one of those mods thats genuinely useful but only if you actually need it. i did mine maybe 18 months ago, swapped in a TCXO replacement and yeah on FT8 and WSPR the drift is basically gone, like the thing sits rock solid now even before it fully warms up. before the mod i had to let it warm up 15-20 minutes or my frequency would be slightly off and id wonder why decodes were inconsistent. so for digital modes i'd say its worth it. for casual SSB ragchewing honestly probably not going to change your life.

the speaker swap is a real improvement though i agree. i used a Tang Band unit someone recommended and it was night and day compared to stock. surprised icom ships these rigs with such mediocre speakers considering what they charge for them

yeah the tx expansion on that radio is pretty benign as mods go, its not like youre retuning finals or anything just unlocking what the hardware can already do. i wouldnt lose sleep over it.

one thing i'd actually suggest if you havent already is looking at the mic gain and compression settings in the menu rather than hardware mods — a lot of people run the 7300 with way too much compression and it sounds processed and harsh on the other end. spent an afternoon dialing mine in properly and got more compliments on audio than from anything physical i ever changed. not as satisfying as opening the box up but it does something
