first SOTA activation went better than expected, few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first activation last weekend, took the KX2 and a random wire up to a local summit (W4T/SU-001 if anyone knows it) and honestly it went way smoother than i thought it would. got my 4 contacts within maybe 20 minutes which surprised me because i was half expecting nobody to be listening. spotted myself on SOTAwatch before heading up which i think made a big difference.

anyway a couple things im still fuzzy on. first, does the summit reference on the activation log have to exactly match the official SOTA database spelling or does it auto-correct when you submit? i typed mine in manually and wasnt 100% sure i had the full reference right. second thing is i had a chaser come back to me who gave me a signal report but then just disappeared before i could get their callsign fully, just got the suffix. do i just leave that one out of the log or is there a way to note it?

also the hike in was only about 45 minutes which felt almost too easy, i know some people do these brutal 4-5 hour climbs and im slightly embarrassed my first one was so chill but whatever, a summit is a summit right

congrats on the first activation, thats always a good feeling when it clicks. on the reference question -- yeah you want the exact format from the database, like W4T/SU-001 with the slash and leading zeros on the number. the log submission on SOTA Reflector and the main database doesnt really auto-correct it, if you get it slightly wrong it can cause the points to not associate properly. worth double checking before you submit if you havent already, just pull up the summit page and copy paste the reference directly.

for the partial callsign -- honestly just leave it out. i know it stings a little but logging an incomplete call can cause headaches for the chaser if they go to claim their points and the suffix doesnt match up right. happens to everyone at some point, especially if theyre calling while youre already partway through a pile. if you caught enough to recognize the call you could always post on the reflector asking if anyone chased you that day and worked it out that way, sometimes chasers check those posts.

and dont feel bad about the easy hike, some of the best SOTA experiences ive had were on quick accessible summits. the hard ones are fun too but theres nothing wrong with building confidence on the shorter ones first.

nice work getting out there. i only did my second activation like two months ago so still pretty new to this myself but the spotting yourself thing is huge, i didnt do it my first time and just sat there calling CQ for like 40 minutes with nothing. lesson learned pretty quick lol. which band were you running mostly? i've been sticking to 40m because it seems like the chasers are always there but curious what worked for you on that summit.
