  1. i was in the same boat not that long ago so i feel you. what finally made TQSL click for me was watching a youtube video specifically about setting up the station location because apparently if that part is wrong your confirmations dont count for DXCC and you wont know until you try to submit. took me like two attempts to get it right i use all three honestly — LoTW gets every QSO automatically through my logging software, eQSL i upload occasionally mostly because some of the older ops i work seem to prefer it, and i still send paper cards to anyone who sends me one or if its a really memorable contact. got a nice card from a VP9 station last winter and that thing is going on the wall for sure
  2. ok so i just got my general license about two months ago and ive been making contacts pretty regularly now, mostly on 40m and some 20m when the band cooperates. someone in my club mentioned i should be uploading to LoTW and also signing up for eQSL and also sending physical cards through the bureau and honestly my head is spinning a little. like do i actually need all three of these? i get that some awards require LoTW specifically (DXCC i think?) but what about eQSL, is that even worth bothering with? and the physical cards through the bureau seem like they take forever from what ive heard. i did send a couple direct cards already to some guys i had longer ragchews with and that felt nice but i cant imagine doing that for every contact. just wondering what most people actually do in practice, not what you theoretically should do. is there a combo that makes sense or do most active ops just do all of them
  3. so I passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and my call finally showed up in the FCC database, got assigned one of those sequential calls which is fine I guess but its kind of a mouthful and doesnt really mean anything to me. a buddy at the club mentioned I could apply for a vanity call instead and I looked it up on the ULS site and now im more confused than before lol like is there a waiting period or something? I thought I read somewhere you have to wait 30 days after getting your sequential call before you can even file for a vanity but then someone else said thats not a thing anymore. also how does it even work, do you just pick whatever call you want and if nobody else wants it you get it? or is there like a lottery? what happens if two people apply for the same call at the same time I know I could probably figure this out by reading through the FCC rules but honestly its a lot and I was hoping someone here could just explain it in plain english. I dont have any specific call in mind yet just something shorter would be nice, im in the 4 land if that matters
  4. the hackrf gets a bad rap for receive sensitivity but honestly for satcom stuff above like 400MHz its not as bad as people say in my experience. i use mine for NOAA APT and some GOES work and its fine with a good LNA out front. you kind of have to treat it like it needs an external LNA almost always and then it becomes more useful. still wouldnt recommend it as your only receiver though if HF is the priority.
  5. so i just passed my technician about 4 months ago and ive been making contacts here and there, mostly on 2m and some HF with my general upgrade i did last month. someone in my local club told me i should be uploading to LoTW but then someone else said eQSL is better and then another guy said i should still send paper cards. im kind of overwhelmed honestly. like whats the actual difference between them and do i need all three? i downloaded the TQSL software and it looks super complicated, i couldnt figure out where to even start. and do people actually still mail physical QSL cards or is that kind of a dying thing? i dont want to be rude and not send one if someone expects it. any help would be appreciated, still learning all this stuff
  6. so i finally did my first activation last weekend, took the ft-818 and a random wire up to a local summit that was only like a 2 mile hike, nothing crazy. managed to get 6 contacts on 20m SSB which i guess is enough to count but i was really hoping for more. the band conditions were kinda rough and i had one guy tell me my signal was pretty weak, which i expected since i was only running 5 watts but still. anyway the thing i'm confused about now is the summit references. i looked up the peak on the SOTA database and it shows a reference number and the points value but i dont totally understand how the points work for the activator vs the chaser. like does the activator get the same points as the chaser or is it different? also i saw something about bonus points in winter but i'm not sure when that applies or if it even applies to my region. also for anyone who does this regularly, is the 818 a reasonable radio for this or should i look at something lighter down the road. the hike wasnt bad but i could feel the weight by the end.
  7. the antenna isolation problem is real and its basically the first thing that kills most SO2R attempts at modest stations. you need somewhere around 40-50dB of isolation between the two rigs minimum just to keep the front end of radio 2 from getting hammered when radio 1 is transmitting, and with attic dipoles on the same or adjacent bands you're probably not going to get there without a lot of bandpass filtering. the Array Solutions or W3NQN filter sets are the usual solution but that's another $500-800 depending on which bands you care about. that said -- the strategy question is actually more interesting to me than the hardware side. your S&P then run approach is pretty common and not wrong, but a lot of contesters flip it depending on conditions. if you can grab a run frequency in the first 20 minutes while the band is hot and everyone's looking for a clear spot, sometimes its better to plant early and let the callers come to you. the mult chasing can happen opportunistically between pileups. its situational though, 10m opening or a good 40m run early sunday morning changes everything
  8. the 7300 jump from a 718 is honestly pretty significant, the SDR panadapter alone changes how you operate — you start finding signals you would have just tuned past before. ive had mine about 3 years and i still find myself using the waterfall to spot activity before i even touch the VFO. that said if youre doing any serious SO2R style stuff or even just casual two-band monitoring the 7610 dual receiver is genuinely useful, not just a gimmick. i use it to babysit a second frequency during pile-ups and it saves a lot of time. as for the shack chaos, yeah i just live with it. i did one big cleanup about two years ago, ran everything through a proper power distribution strip, labeled cables, the whole thing. looked great for maybe a month. its basically back to normal now. some guys have these immaculate shacks and i have no idea how they maintain that when theres actual operating happening
  9. yeah the weight adjustment is tricky honestly. i spent like two weeks fiddling with mine before i just left it at the default and focused on the practice instead. one thing i do is record myself sending with audacity and play it back, its kind of painful to listen to but you catch stuff you dont notice in real time. also look up the G4FON trainer if you havent already, good for drilling receiving and some people use it to mentally reinforce what the characters should sound like which kind of helps the sending side too if that makes sense
  10. so i decided i want to get my technician license and ive been looking around online for study materials but theres just so much stuff out there i dont really know whats worth using vs whats outdated or whatever. a friend of mine said just memorize the question pool but that seems like it would take forever and i wouldnt actually understand anything. is there like a standard way people do this or does everyone just kind of figure it out on their own also i saw there are apps for this, are any of them actually good? i downloaded one but it seems like it just throws random questions at me with no structure which is kind of overwhelming when you dont know anything yet
  11. the telnet cluster question is a good one — for casual operating the web interfaces are totally fine honestly. dxwatch pulls from multiple cluster nodes so youre not really missing much. where telnet starts to matter is if you're running logging software like n1mm or log4om and want spots to feed directly into your bandmap, that's where it gets really useful. but for just eyeballing whats active on a band the websites do the job. one thing i do like about connecting directly through the software is you can send your own spots and also do dx alerts for specific callsigns or entities, some of the web tools dont let you do that as cleanly. but again if youre just hunting around on 40m for ragchews or whatever, dont overthink it. the workflow you have sounds fine to me.
  12. there's no hard rule that says you MUST use phonetics every single time but the general idea is you use them when there's any chance of ambiguity or the band is noisy. like B and D and E and P and T all sound similar especially on HF with some QRM going on, so phonetics are there to clear that up. on a quiet repeater with a strong signal you can usually get away with just saying the letters. the callsign thing on 40m yeah that's just some guys who've been doing it so long they don't think about it anymore. not really best practice but nobody's going to fail their license over it. when you're doing a formal exchange like in a contest or passing traffic in a net you really should be using full NATO phonetics though, that's pretty much expected. for casual ragchews it's more relaxed. just use your judgement and when in doubt phonetics never hurts anything.
  13. so i've been wanting to build something from scratch for a while now and last weekend i finally sat down and put together a crystal set based on a design i found in an old handbook from like 1978. nothing fancy, just a coil wound on a toilet paper tube, a variable cap i pulled off an old am radio, a 1N34A germanium diode and some high impedance headphones i grabbed at a hamfest for two bucks. got it picking up a couple of the stronger AM broadcast stations no problem but i'm wondering if there's anything i can do to improve selectivity without going crazy with a more complicated design. the coil is wound with 26 gauge wire, about 60 turns, and i've got the tap set maybe a third of the way up but i'm not 100% sure i have the antenna coupling right. tried a long wire out the window maybe 30 feet or so and that helped signal strength but now everything bleeds into everything else and i cant really separate the stations at all. anybody built one of these recently or have suggestions for the coil geometry or coupling? also wondering if i should bother adding a preselector stage or if thats overkill for what this is
  14. oh man this is exactly the kind of post I needed to see. I've been going back and forth on the QCX mini for like two months but keep telling myself i need more power before i can actually make contacts. maybe im just overthinking it. was the SMD soldering really okay for a beginner? thats the part that scares me the most tbh, i have pretty shaky hands sometimes.
  15. so i decided i want to get my technician license and ive been poking around online trying to figure out how to study for it but theres so much stuff out there i dont really know what to use. i downloaded the question pool PDF from the ARRL website but honestly its like 400 questions and i dont even know if i should just memorize all of them or actually try to understand the material. a friend told me hamstudy.org is good but then someone else said to get a book. do people actually read the whole book or just do practice tests over and over until they pass? i feel like i could probably pass just memorizing answers but im not sure if thats the right way to go about it. also the math stuff scares me a little, like ohms law and the decibel questions. is there a lot of actual math on the test or is most of it just rules and regulations type stuff
