What to Expect at Your First VE Test Session - Complete Walkthrough

Taking my Technician exam next Saturday and getting nervous about the actual test session process. I've been studying for months but realized I don't know what to expect when I walk into that room!

Can someone break down the typical flow? I know to bring my $15 exam fee and photo ID, but what happens after that? How long does the whole process take? Do they grade it immediately?

Also wondering about calculators - I can bring one as long as memory can be flushed before the exam, right?

Here's the typical flow: arrive 15 minutes early, check in with VEs, fill out Form 605, take exam (usually 45 minutes max), then wait while they grade it. Results are transmitted to FCC within 1-2 business days for weekend sessions. Most sessions are very relaxed - the VEs want you to succeed!

Don't forget you need your FRN number! New applicants must register in FCC CORES before the session and get their FRN assigned. I almost got turned away because I hadn't done this step. The whole process took about 1.5 hours including waiting for others to finish.

Pro tip from a VE: Your exam will be 35 multiple choice questions from the 300 question pool, testing radio technology, operating practices, and regulations. Simple scientific calculators are fine. We usually have the results graded within 10 minutes - most of us have been doing this for years and want to celebrate with you when you pass!
