How long to study for General exam as new Tech?

Just got my Technician license a month ago and I'm hooked! I've been enjoying the local repeaters but I'm really interested in DX work on HF. How long should I plan to study for the General exam? I have basic electronics knowledge from my work as an IT tech but I'm new to RF concepts.

What are the key differences between Technician and General material? Should I jump right in or get more comfortable with my Tech privileges first?

Congrats on getting your ticket! Most people need about 20-30 hours for Technician but 30-40 hours for General. The General exam digs deeper into RF theory, propagation, and circuit analysis. I'd recommend starting with HamStudy.org for free practice tests and the ARRL General manual.

I upgraded after 6 months as a Tech and wish I'd done it sooner! The General exam covers more in-depth knowledge like calculating AC circuits and RMS voltage. If you're comfortable with basic electronics, focus on propagation theory and band plans - that's where most Techs struggle.

Take your time and don't rush it. I spent 3 months studying 1-2 hours per night and felt well prepared. You need 26 out of 35 questions correct (74%). The key topics are operating procedures, propagation, antennas, and RF safety. Practice tests are your friend!
