    honestly the ARRL Tech manual is fine but yeah its overkill if you just want to pass. what most people do is use HamStudy.org or the Ham Radio Prep app and just grind through the question pool. the actual exam pulls directly from that pool so if you know all the questions you will pass, pretty much guaranteed. took me like two weeks of doing maybe 20-30 questions a night while watching tv.
    that said i'd recommend at least trying to understand the basic concepts like what the different bands are for and basic ohms law stuff because it actually makes the questions easier to remember instead of just memorizing answers. some of the electrical questions especially -- if you understand why the answer is what it is it sticks better. but if youre really short on time just do the practice exams on HamStudy until you're consistently hitting like 85% or higher and youll be fine on test day

    so i finally got around to building a proper 40m dipole instead of using that random wire ive had strung up forever. cut each leg to roughly 33.5 feet based on the 468/f formula, used some 14 gauge stranded wire i had leftover from a house project, and fed it with RG-8X through a basic 1:1 choke balun i wound myself on a FT-240-43 core.
    hung it as an inverted V with the apex at about 35 feet off an old pine tree and the ends tied off to fence posts. got it tuned pretty well across most of the band with the MFJ-259 showing around 1.4:1 at 7.150 which im happy with. but the feedpoint situation is bugging me a little — i just used a PL-259 chassis connector in a project box with some silicone around the edges. it rained pretty hard sunday and i noticed some weird readings afterward, wondering if moisture got in or if thats just normal variation with weather changes.
    also curious if anyone has opinions on weatherproofing the feedpoint better, i've seen people use self-amalgamating tape but also coax seal and im not sure which is worth the effort

    so ive been messing with APRS for a few weeks now and i finally got my Mobilinkd TNC paired with my baofeng on 144.390 and packets are actually hitting aprs.fi which is great. but the position it shows is like 40 miles from where i actually am. im feeding it GPS coordinates from my phone via the bluetooth connection and the app shows the right coords, so im not sure where the breakdown is happening.
    running APRSdroid on android, the GPS lock looks solid, i can see it pulling lat/lon that matches where i am. but on the map online my icon keeps showing up somewhere way out in the boonies. tried deleting my callsign from the site and re-beaconing but same thing every time. anyone run into this before or have an idea what im doing wrong

    so ive been at this for about 4 months now and im stuck somewhere around 10-12wpm and it feels like the wall is just not moving. started with the Koch method on the LCWO website which was great for getting the characters down but now im just kind of plateauing and not sure what the next step is supposed to be.
    i do maybe 20-30 minutes a day which i know probably isnt enough but thats what i can fit in around work and kids. mostly just doing the random character drills and some of the word exercises. should i be doing actual on-air stuff at this point or is it too early? i dont want to slow everyone down on a slow speed net if im not ready.
    anyway just curious how long it took people to go from casual beginner to actually feeling comfortable around 20wpm because right now 20wpm sounds like complete gibberish to me and i cant even imagine getting there

    so i finally cracked a T32 pileup last weekend after literally years of near misses and it got me thinking about what actually works vs what people think works. ill preface this by saying i run a pretty modest station, K3 and a 4el yagi at 45ft, so nothing crazy.
    what finally worked for me was listening to where the DX was actually pulling calls from instead of just firing away. sounds obvious but honestly i used to just transmit and hope. this time i sat and listened for probably 15 minutes first and realized he was working maybe 3-4khz up and kind of cycling through different parts of the spread. once i figured out the pattern i just dropped my call right where i thought he'd move next and boom, first call he came back to me.
    also turned off the noise blanker which i know sounds weird but i was getting some intermod on my rx from all the stations in the pileup and it was smearing signals together. cleaned it up a lot.
    curious what other people do, especially working split on 40m where the rx window you have is so compressed. anyone running separate rx antennas for this kind of thing?

    ok so i just got my technician like two months ago and ive been making contacts pretty regularly now, mostly on 2m but starting to get into HF a little. someone in my local club mentioned i should be uploading my logs to LoTW and also maybe eQSL but honestly im not totally sure what the difference even is or why you'd need both. like is one better than the other for awards? and do people still actually send physical QSL cards through the mail or is that basically a dead thing now
    i did make an account on eQSL already and uploaded a couple contacts but i havent heard back on any of them yet so i dont know if i did it right. LoTW seems a lot more complicated with the certificates and all that, kind of intimidating honestly. any advice would be great

    the "always ready" thing is something a lot of people struggle with honestly. i went through like three versions of my kit before i stopped second guessing it. what helped me was just deciding it was done and leaving it alone except for a quarterly check where i top off the battery and make sure nothing walked off.
    for the non-radio stuff — printed frequency lists are huge, especially your local ARES/RACES nets and any served agency freqs you might need. a waterproof notepad is better than a regular logbook if you're outside in crappy weather. headlamp, a few granola bars, basic first aid stuff. sounds like boy scout nonsense but you'll want it at hour 6 of a deployment.
    for the laptop power question, a lot of guys run a small 12v to usb-c converter off the same battery. works fine for a chromebook or older thinkpad. some people add a second smaller battery just for the laptop so you're not draining your radio battery. depends how long you expect to be out. my kit has been through two actual deployments and one was almost 18 hours so the power planning really matters more than people think when they're first setting up

    The stuff people always forget is the small stuff honestly. Extra fuses, a good multi-tool, a headlamp (not just a flashlight, headlamp so your hands are free), a notepad and like 3 pens because pens always go missing, and some kind of logging sheet if you're going to be doing anything formal. Oh and a copy of your license printed out, sounds dumb but some served agency folks actually ask.
    For antenna the Wolf River Coils setup has worked pretty well for a buddy of mine doing ARES stuff, he can get on 40m in maybe 8 minutes once he has a spot picked. I personally use a linked dipole cut for 40/20 and just toss it in a tree with a throw line, not the fanciest but it works every time which is kind of the whole point. The buddistick is fine but fiddly when you're stressed out.
    Biggest thing I'd say though is actually go out and deploy the whole kit in your backyard once or twice before you need it. You will find every gap that way, guaranteed.
  9. so i got my general ticket back in the spring and ive been mostly doing local nets and some digital stuff but everyone keeps telling me i should try a contest and CQ WW is apparently the big one coming up. the thing is i honestly dont really understand how it works. like i get that you exchange signal reports and stuff but what counts as a contact, how do zones work, and do i need special software or can i just log on paper for a casual entry.
    also is it worth even trying if i only have a dipole and 100 watts? feels like id just be getting walked over by guys with stacked yagis and a kilowatt. not trying to win anything just want to see what the fuss is about i guess

    Stock Yaesu rotor computer interface runs about $600 without cables, and Green Herron is similar price. Decided to try the K3NG Arduino solution instead. Using Arduino UNO R3 ($30) with Seeed Relay Shield ($20), plus proto board and MOSFET - total cost around $68. With Ham Radio Deluxe 5.0, the rotor turns smoothly and stops within +/- 1.0 degrees of target - exactly what I wanted for my setup. Had to adjust data rate to 9600bps for HRD compatibility since it doesn't support the default 115200bps, but now I can double-click anywhere on the planet and have automatic rotor pointing. Anyone else made the switch from commercial controllers? The K3NG firmware emulates Yaesu GS-232A/B and Easycom protocols and can easily interface with commercial rotator control units or serve as complete replacement.

    Just remember that some remote services like RemoteHamRadio explicitly state "If you do not hold a U.S. issued FCC license, you can obtain one" - they're assuming you have the proper license for the station location. The regulatory burden is on you as the control operator to ensure compliance with both jurisdictions. When in doubt, stick to CW and phone contacts without third party content.
