APRS digipeater not hearing my beacon — missing something obvious?

 Loading...

so ive been messing with APRS for a few weeks now and i cant figure out why my position beacons arent showing up on aprs.fi. im running a TM-D710G with the internal TNC and ive got it set to beacon every 2 minutes on 144.390, path is WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1. i can hear other stations coming through fine, the squelch breaks and i see packets scrolling on the display so the radio is definitely decoding stuff. but when i search my callsign on aprs.fi nothing shows up or it shows a position from like 3 days ago which was when i had it hooked up to a different antenna outside.

right now im using a mag mount on the windowsill which i know isnt ideal but there should be at least one digi close enough to hear me, aprs.fi coverage map shows a couple within maybe 15 miles. my TX power is set to 5W. is there something in the TNC setup i might have wrong? ive gone through the menu like 4 times and everything looks right to me but obviously something is off

few things to check. first thing id do is listen to your own transmit — key up and watch if the TNC LED flashes when it actually sends a packet. sometimes the beacon interval is set but the PTT isnt actually keying the radio properly, especially if you have any VOX or weird audio level stuff going on. the D710 internal TNC is usually solid but ive seen people have the audio input level set too hot or too low and the digi just cant decode it even if it hears the signal.

also check your MYCALL is set correctly in the TNC config, not just in the radio memory. they're separate settings on that radio and i know at least two people who had the same confusion. and yeah 5W through a window-mounted mag mount could definitely be the issue too, glass and metal framing kills a lot of signal. try keying it manually from outside even just as a test to see if a digi picks you up at all.

also worth trying aprsdroid or something on your phone just to verify the frequency and that your audio path is actually working end to end. had a similar thing happen to me and it turned out my SSID was set weird and i was just searching the wrong callsign on aprs.fi the whole time, felt pretty dumb about it honestly
