First Timer's Guide to CQ WW DX Contest - What Should I Expect?

I've been licensed for about 8 months now and keep hearing about this CQ WW DX Contest coming up. As a General with an IC-7300 and a dipole, should I even bother jumping in? It's apparently the largest Amateur Radio competition in the world with over 35,000 participants - sounds pretty intimidating for someone still learning the HF bands!

What's the typical experience like for a new contester? Any advice on bands to focus on or times to operate?

Absolutely jump in! Even a few hours on the air will teach you something, and this is how the next generation learns what makes contesting special. Your IC-7300 and dipole will work great - start on 2

Don't be intimidated by the numbers! I did my first CQ WW last year with just 100W and a wire antenna. Tune, call once, listen, and log. Try working stations again on another band. The pace is fast but everyone's helpful.

The logging software makes a huge difference - try N1MM+ if you haven't already. With solar conditions at their peak, 2025 promises even better propagation so this is actually a great year to start! Focus on having fun over scores.
