James Davis's post in first time doing CQ WW this year, what am I getting into was marked as the answeryeah Field Day is kind of its own thing, our club does it every year and its more of a cookout that happens to have radio operating going on lol. dont get me wrong its fun and a great way to meet people in your local ham community but if you want to really sharpen your contesting chops CQ WW or even the ARRL DX contests are where youll learn more. that said Field Day is great for just getting comfortable in the chair and making a lot of contacts in a short time without the pressure of a real competition feeling so heavy. also if your club has experienced ops running it youll probably pick up tips just by watching. i did my first SOTA activation last spring and that kind of scratched a different itch entirely, very different from contest operating but man its addictive once you start. anyway for CQ WW just jump in, the first few hours are confusing for everyone but it clicks eventually.

James Davis's post in when do you actually need to use phonetics vs just saying the letter was marked as the answerok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i still get confused about when youre supposed to use the NATO phonetic alphabet versus just saying the letter normally. like if someone asks me to confirm my callsign do i always spell it out phonetically or only sometimes? i feel like i hear people on repeaters just say their callsign normally and then other times people go full Alpha Bravo Charlie on everything and i cant figure out if theres a rule or if its just preference
also is it weird if i use phonetics wrong, like if i accidentally say something thats not the standard word? i said Foxtrot correctly the other day and felt kind of proud of myself but then stumbled on November and just said N so idk. nobody said anything but still.

James Davis's post in asked a dumb question on a net last night and felt bad about it was marked as the answeryeah same thing happened to me lol, i tried to have like a whole conversation with net control during a directed net and they were very polite but i could tell i was holding things up. now i just say my call and 'no traffic' and save any questions for after. its actually kind of a nice ritual once you get used to the format

James Davis's post in First Timer's Guide to CQ WW DX Contest - What Should I Expect? was marked as the answerThe logging software makes a huge difference - try N1MM+ if you haven't already. With solar conditions at their peak, 2025 promises even better propagation so this is actually a great year to start! Focus on having fun over scores.

James Davis's post in SO2R Configuration Help - MK2R+ Audio Matrix Issues was marked as the answerSetting up my first serious SO2R station with K3 twins and MK2R+. Everything seemed to work fine during initial testing, but I'm having intermittent audio issues during contests. The headphone split randomly switches back to combined audio while I'm in the middle of copying an exchange on radio 2. This only seems to happen when radio 1 is transmitting, and the switching won't reverse until I stop the CQ.
I've tested all cable connections and they appear solid. Has anyone experienced similar issues with SO2R controllers? I'm wondering if this could be an RF issue from the amplifier feedback, or possibly a timing problem in the control logic. Any diagnostics I should try before the next contest weekend?

James Davis's post in confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general was marked as the answerok so i just upgraded from tech to general last month and im trying to figure out the 40 meter band. i know i have more privileges now but every chart i look at seems to show something slightly different and honestly its making my head spin a little.
like i get that there are phone and cw segments but where exactly does the phone portion start for generals? and what about the band edges, ive heard people say you should never operate right at the edge but i dont fully understand why. is that a rule or just a suggestion kind of thing. also someone at my club mentioned something about a gentleman's agreement on certain frequencies but didnt really explain what that meant
sorry if this is a dumb question just want to make sure im not gonna accidentally transmit somewhere i shouldnt be

James Davis's post in first POTA activation went better than expected honestly was marked as the answeryeah the phone logging thing drove me nuts at first too. i switched to a small paper log and then enter everything into the app after i get home, takes maybe 10 minutes and way less stressful while youre actually operating. some people swear by the apps but for me paper in the field just works better, especially when its cold and your fingers dont cooperate
nice work on the activation though, 12 contacts is solid for a first time out. once you get the hang of it youll be knocking them out way faster

James Davis's post in confused about CTCSS tones on local repeater — am i doing this wrong? was marked as the answerok so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (technician) and i finally got my baofeng programmed with the local 2m repeater in my area. the repeater listing on repeaterbook shows a 100.0 Hz tone and i put that in as the transmit tone. but sometimes when i key up i hear a weird squelch tail and other times nothing happens at all. like my signal goes out but i dont get any response and nobody acknowledges me or anything.
i asked a guy at my club and he said maybe i have the tone on the wrong side — like im encoding when i should be decoding or something? i honestly got a little lost. also not sure about the etiquette here, like do i just say my callsign and wait? or do i say something specific. i dont want to be that guy who annoys everyone on the repeater lol. any help appreciated
