bands been weird lately or is it just me

 Loading...

so ive been noticing 17m and 20m acting really strange the past couple weeks. some days i can work europe all morning no problem and then the next day its like the band just doesnt exist. i know solar flux has been kinda up and down but i cant figure out the pattern. checked pskreporter and there are signals out there, just not making it to me i guess.

been doing this about 3 years now and i feel like i should have a better handle on how propagation works by now but honestly it still feels like black magic sometimes. anybody been tracking the flux index and noticing anything specific or is this just normal variation i should stop worrying about

yeah its definitely been inconsistent, i was watching the solar flux the other day and it dropped down into the low 140s after being up around 170 for a few days and the bands just fell apart. 20m especially gets weird during those transitions i find. the K index matters a lot too, even a moderate geomagnetic disturbance can wipe out your paths to europe even when the flux looks decent on paper.

i use the DXmaps site and also just keep an eye on the WWV broadcast at 18 minutes past the hour, old habit but gives you a quick sanity check on conditions. honestly after 20+ years i still get surprised by how the bands behave. some of my best DX contacts happened on days where everything looked terrible on paper. dont sweat it too much, just keep the radio on and youll start to feel the patterns over time even if you cant always explain them.

omg same, i thought my antenna had a problem last tuesday because 20 was completely dead for me around 1400z and then i saw someone on the club discord working JA stations no problem on 17. turned out there was apparently a nice short path opening that i totally missed. i really need to get better at checking propagation tools before i just assume the band is dead lol
