Extra class sub-band privileges: What's worth the upgrade?

I'm planning to upgrade from General to Extra and wondering about the practical benefits. Amateur Extra Class privileges include all of the privileges given to Technician Class and General Class licensees, plus the use of all frequencies and modes on the HF bands. Achieving an Extra Class license grants access to all available amateur band frequencies, removing the limitations faced by General Class operators on the 80, 40, 20, and 15-meter bands. How often do you actually use those exclusive sub-bands, and is the contest advantage worth the study time?

I upgraded 5 years ago and honestly use the Extra sub-bands maybe 20% of the time. The real benefit is during contests when the General portion is packed - having access to those lower frequency segments on 40 and 20 meters makes a huge difference for DX.

I can say that I am an Extra and was an Advanced at one time (I never held a Technician class license, I jumped from Novice to General back in the day). I very rarely exercise my Extra class privileges. When I do, it's usually to get on 80 m phone, as it's a little quieter there. For casual operation, General gets you 95% of what you need.

Beyond the frequency privileges, the knowledge gained by studying for the Amateur Extra Class test gives you the background you need to experiment with antennas and electronics with more confidence. The deeper understanding of circuit theory and advanced topics has made me a better operator overall, even if I don't always use the exclusive segments.
